Cold Lazarus

SG-1 is shown on a desert-like world with blue skies and bright yellow sands, almost lemon colored. Jack tells everyone to spread out and take a look around.

Teal'C seemed to be standing guard; Daniel and Sam go into one of the sections they see farther afield. Many of those sections have crystal shards scattered around in small groups. Almost all of them are broken into bits, but they manage to find about three of them with large pieces intact. Jack signals to Teal'C that he's going in another direction. He comes upon a field of shards too, and seeing a sort of large one, he squats down and reaches out to touch it. Just as he makes contact, an almost blinding flash of light explodes between him and the shard, throwing him backward. His weapon flies out of his hands and he loses consciousness.

A little later, Daniel and Sam have finished recon and ask Teal'C where Jack is. Daniel tries contacting him by walkie talkie and says they've loaded up Fred and are ready to return.

A copy of Jack O'Neill (I'll call him J2), stands over Jack's unconscious body with a puzzled look on his face, a sort of "Why haven't you woke up yet?" look. He picks up Jack's hat, and hears Daniel and Sam trying to reach him by walkie talkie. He then picks up Jack's weapon and walks towardthe SG-1 team, giving Jack one last look.

SG-1 comes through the gate with J2 and are welcomed by Hammond, who says debriefing is at 0-900. J2 takes a look around the SGC.

At the debriefing, Carter and Daniel describe what the planet was like, telling Hammond there seemed to have been no habitation for 1,000 years, nor were there recent signs of mining activity or Goa'ulds apparent. Daniel stated that the crystals appeared to be grouped together, perhaps in the way Greek- based cultures treated gemstones. While they're talking, J2, who has been standing to the side, turned slightly away from the table, has flashbacks to when the real Jack touched the blue crystal. Hammond puts SG-1 on stand down until their next mission.

J2 goes to O'Neill's locker and takes a cigar box out, which is filled with a wedding ring, and old pictures: A baby picture, a photo of Jack holdinga trophy with a young boy holding a bat and wearing a baseball glove, as well as a picture Jack and the boy standing with a woman in front of a house. The box also has several letters and other mementos of Jack's life.

Carter comes in and makes jokes about how it's a woman's locker room now. She sees him going through the pictures and tells him how she's an auntie, with a brother, niece and nephew living in San Diego. When she says, "You have a family," he tells her yes in a monotone voice. He then puts the box back in the locker and says bye sort of curtly to Sam. As he leaves the room, Daniel comes in. Sam mentions Jack's family to him, and he tells her that Jack used to be married, but he and his wife separated when their son died.

J2, on his way out of the SGC, is stopped by Teal'C, who reminded him that he'd promised to show Teal'C his world. J2 told him they'd have to wait "another time ' and continued on his way out.

Sam continued to discuss Jack's family life with Daniel, saying she'd figured he just didn't a life outside the SGC, and that she hadn't even known he'd been married. They wind up in the lab with one of the crystals they brought back with them. She asked what happened to their son, and Daniel told her that he'd accidentally killed himself with Jack's personal handgun. Jack withdrew from the world and never forgave himself. Neither had he seen his wife, Sarah, since he'd joined the SGC. He also stated how Jack didn't discuss his personal life very much at all.

J2 is shown outside Jack's former home. He quietly practices saying,"Hello, Sarah," and sees her coming out of the house. She starts working under the hood of the car in the driveway. As she steps a little to the left, she sees J2, and questions how long he's been there, and why he didn't say something. He says he did. She says, "Right. You did." He looks around while they're talking and sees Charlie's bike and a basketball goal near the house. Then he made the mistake of asking her where Charlie was and why she'd kept some of his things. J2 gripped her by the arms and started calling aloud for Charlie. She thinks either he's being cruel, or this is some sick joke. She jerks away from him and runs into the house crying. J2 does not understand why she's so upset.

Her father comes outside and tells him that upsetting a woman is a stupid way to win a woman's heart, and invites J2 in. Meanwhile, a very puzzled Teal'C is getting a look at American television. He switches channels from a news broadcast of a riot, the stock market, and rock and roll, etc. As he turns the TV off, Sam and Daniel come rushing into the room.

Daniel: "Teal'c, we need your help."
Teal'c: "Your world is a strange place."
Daniel: (confused)"...so's yours."

They tell him that they need him to log out his staff weapon, which makes him think they are being deployed. They tell him no, it's ok...come on!

J2 is in Charlie's room with his ex-father-in-law. He has flashbacks of when Charlie was alive, and told the grandfather that he thought he would find Charlie there. The man tells him Sarah comes up there to talk to Charlie sometimes as a way of getting over his death. He suggested J2 do the same, but warned him that he'd better not break Sarah's heart again or else he'd answer to him. He left J2 alone in the room, and J2 started touching Charlie's things and continued to have flashbacks, including one of the day Charlie died. Jack was coming home, kissed his wife hello, and he asked her if Charlie was ready. As she told him that he'd been running around there a few minutes ago, they heard the gun go off. J2 hugs Charlie's pillow; Sarah came to astop in the hallway when she saw him in Charlie's room.

In the SGC gateroom, Teal'C shot his staff weapon at one of thecrystals, which prompted a guard to ask what was going on in there. Teal'C asked Daniel and Sam if they'd received permission for him to fire his weapon in the gateroom; they replied that they had. They picked up a piece of the crystal and Carter explained that the melted crystal shard reminded her of when Apophis and his crew had blasted the gateroom. She said they'd spent much time trying to figure out what they had used that day. She compared the crystal shard they'd just made with the ones bought back from the planet, and they matched, proving that the crystals on the other planet had been destroyed by Goa'uld technology.

As J2 left Charlie's room, Sarah stopped him by saying he'd never talked about Charlie since he'd died; so why now. They discussed how much their son had loved playing the game. She was going to talk more, when he told her he had to get back to the Stargate. She thought he'd said it to avoid talking to her about Charlie anymore. He asked her what was wrong, and she told him she'd been crying. She wanted to know what was with his getting all emotional upstairs; she thought he'd been going to cry. What happened to all that O'Neill bravado. He told her he didn't have it anymore, and they smiled at each other. At that point, he smelled smoke, which reminded her that Mike had left a casserole in the oven.

Sam was getting all deep into the crystal analysis (Teal C, and Daniel was taking a closer look at the crystal. All of a sudden it shifted into a copy of his face and blinked...he almost lost his balance, he was so shocked. Sam and Teal'C came over, and Daniel told Sam to get closer to it. She too, was shocked. The crystal shifted into a copy of her face and said, "Help us" in a woman's voice.

Daniel: "It was trying to communicate with us."
Carter: "I don't know the magic password. Do you?"

As they drew closer to the shard, the gate started rolling like it does when someone comes through. Due to the unauthorized start up, the guards started running into the gate room, and Hammond told Sam that the gate had been activated by remote control.

Jack stepped through the gate, and wondered why the team had left without him and why all the weapons were pointed his way. Hammond asked him who he was, at which point he asked what was going on there. They locked him away in a room with a surveillance camera. He got on a chair into the camera demanding to be released. Hammond said if that wasn't O'Neill he wanted to know who they were looking at.

Sarah took J2 to the park where they'd met, and told him to tell her what was on his mind. What did he want with her. He asked her why she was angry at him, and he told her she had been when Charlie died. She told him yes, she'd been angry because it was his gun, in their house, but they could have helped each other if he'd been more open about what had happened. She had needed him and he wasn't there. She was surprised that he could even tell her that he'd known she needed him. She asked him if that was what he had come to tell her; he told her she wouldn't understand why he'd come. She said to try her. When he told her that he thought he could come and get Charlie and take him back through the Stargate, she started to argue that Charlie was gone and they should be talking about them and what had happened. She cut off her statement when J2 collapsed and streaks of blue light started going over him like an electric shock. She helped him up and got ready to take him to the hospital.

After getting a once over from Janet to verify that Jack was who he told him he was, the group showed him the gate surveillance tape of SG-1 coming through the stargate from the crystal planet, J2 in tow. Sam figured that J2 was a energy-based mimic of Jack like the crystal had mimicked her and Daniel, only a more powerful form of it. When Hammond asked if the crystal had communicated with them, Daniel recalled that the crystal shard had asked for their help.

The group started querying the crystal, which told them it must return through the Stargate soon because it couldn't sustain its energy on their world. Called itself a unity crystal, and told them it didn't speak earlier out of fear that they would destroy it like the Goa'uld had when one of them touched the crystal and was destroyed by it. They gathered the crystals in one place and destroyed them. The crystal could no longer sustain the face, so it changed back to its regular crystal form.

Jack asked for ideas on what the group thought was going on, Daniel posed the question to Jack of what would he do if his race had been destroyed because he'd harmed a Goa'uld, what would he do if he thought it was going to happen again. They had the base searched for J2, who was not found. Sam came in with the information that she'd been studying the other crystals, and they gave off small amounts of nuclear radiation, which might be harmful if J2 started breaking down and gave off lethal amounts. She figured that since J2 had been in O'Neill's locker, that was probably where he went, to see his family. Jack tried to call the house but got the answering machine, and took off.

The team got ready to leave with him. Hammond checked with local police and found out a J. O'Neill had been admitted to a local hospital. He told Teal'c that he could not take his staff weapon with him. He reminded the team that they could not say anything to the outside world about the Stargate or the SGC's existence. He then gave Teal'C a Chicago hat to hide his tattoo.

Teal'c: (Hammond hands him a baseball cap) "Chicago. The windy city. Home of the Blackhawks, the Bulls, and the White Sox."
O'Neill: "Don't forget the Cubs."

At the hospital, J2 wakes up with Charlie on his mind. He states that it was the place where Charlie was brought after the accident and where he died, which was confirmed by Sarah. She asked him what was happening to him. He told her he had to get to the Stargate. When she started to discuss that, he began going radioactive with all this blue light flashing even worse than when they were in the park. She ran out of the hall. Her hand was being bandaged by a nurse when Jack ran in. Sarah was surprised to see the real Jack, who hugged her and asked if she was OK. He told her he wanted to hear all about it, but later. He and Teal'C went down the hall with masks on; blue lights were still seriously flashing. J2 had little shocks of energy going off. The Geiger counter Sam was holding gave off little clicks.

When Jack went up to J2, he told him he wouldn't hurt him. J2 warned him to stay back, because his energy was disintegrating. As he was finishing his statement, a shock of energy went off and threw O'Neill backwards, again. Sam and crew noted the radiation had dropped off, so they should be OK to take off their masks.

Teal'C made sure Jack was OK, and Jack went over to J2 and explained that he hadn't come to kill him; the Goa'uld was their enemy too. Jack asked why J2 had come. He said when Jack had touched him on J2's home planet and had been shocked, he tried to heal him, but didn't understand what the injury was. So J2 looked into his mind and saw the mind of a warrior. Fearing Jack would react to the injury like the Goa'uld who destroyed his race, he tried to heal Jack before it was discovered that Jack had even been hurt. That was when J2 read his mind and realized his deepest hurt was not the crystal shock he'd been given, it was Charlie's death that had hurt him most. J2 figured he could bring Charlie to him, but didn't understand his physical death meant Charlie would no longer exist as flesh and blood in Jack's world. Physical death didn't have the same meaning to the unity crystals.

Jack asked J2 if he was dying now, and he said yes. But he said that he couldn't bring Charlie to Jack. Jack said, "Charlie's gone," but J2 disagreed, telling him Charlie was inside of him. J2 touched him and became Charlie, telling him he couldn't change what happened the day Charlie died, just like he couldn't change what happened the day the Goa'uld destroyed his world, but he carried Charlie inside himself. Sam and Daniel were standing by, and told Jack the radiation levels were low, but didn't know how long. Jack told J2 they had to go. J2 asked for Sarah, and they walked out of the hall to see her. Jack sent Sam and Daniel to the chopper. She saw J2-Charlie; he touched her hand and she stared at him, tears in her eyes.

Jack told her he wasn't Charlie, and that he had to get him back to the Stargate. She hugged Jack and asked if he know what "the other guy" had said. He had a pretty fair idea. They hugged a little longer and J2 and Jack went to the chopper. She whispered to Jack to take care of himself.

Back at the SGC, Jack told the crew to keep the lights on because he'd be back. He and J2 stepped through the Stargate.
