The First Commandment

It's night time. Two men burst out of the forest, being pursued by the planet's natives. As one man, Connor, manages to reach the gate, his comrade Frakes falls behind from a dart. Connor manages to activate the Stargate when he realizes this. The natives' leader turns out to be Captain Jonas Hansen, who kills Frakes and then orders him to be burned.

The SG-1 team arrives at the planet the next day to investigate. They prepare themselves for the high UV rays this planet has, commenting on how unexpected it was to find heavy plant life on such a planet. Teal'c tells the team that the Go'ualds terraform many Stargate worlds like this. As the team departs from the Stargate, Carter wonders why she doesn't hear any birds.

Daniel wanders off to find any roads. He turns around, realizing that he was alone. As he calls out to his misplaced teammates, a man buried in dry leaves, jumps out of hiding and grabs Daniel. He takes Daniel's gun but Jack comes from behind and points his at the attacker. When the man turns around, Jack realizes that the man is Lieuntenant Connor of SG-4. Jack demands why Connor's team had sent a remote signal and then no one came through. Connor doesn't answer at first. He rushes to where he last saw Frakes, only to find the man's dog tags among the ashes.

Connor tells the team that when they first came through the Stargate to the planet, the natives here had treated them like gods. Jonas soon gradually believed this, too and appointed himself as the natives' god. O'Neill, deciding that the situation was alot more worst than he originally thought, orders Carter to return to SGC for help. He also orders Connor to return for medical assistance. Carter refuses, telling Jack that she was familiar with Jonas which could prove useful to the mission. Connor also refuses.

Jonas is informed of the SG-1's arrival, which he said was according to plan.

Daniel: "This tastes like chicken."
Carter: "So what's wrong with it?"
Daniel: "It's macaroni and cheese."

Meanwhile, the SG-1 teams sets camp. Connor tells of how Jonas and his team first came through the Stargate and the natives immediately believed them to be gods. But rather than deny it, Jonas went along with it- to the surprise of the SG-1 team. Connor stated that Jonas believed that the natives' belief would inspire them to form a central government and rebuild their planet. The natives' beliefs were cemented when Jonas went off to find a missing child for two days in the dangerous UV rays of the sun. It is assumed here that this was the cause of Jonas' madness. Some natives had doubted Jonas to be god. If that had occurred, Jonas would tie them to a stake out in the sun for seven days so they could die a slow and painful death. Daniel points out to the team that the seven days were a specific biblical reference.

During all this, Jonas watches over the natives. They are building a temple. Occasionally one would collapse and get beaten until he rises again.

That night, the natives attacked the camp and captures Connor. The team goes to find Jonas the next day on hopes to rescue Connor. Sam is telling Daniel about Jonas. It turns out that she was once engaged with Jonas. She described him as a man who always needed control, not too far from madness. Carter ended the relationship with Jonas. When she saw him again in SGC, Carter had figured that Jonas had changed for the better.

Jack goes down to investigate after seeing Connor was tied to a stake and left out in the dangerous sun. Carter soon comes down when she spies one of Jonas' men beating on a boy. She goes there to defend the boy. Jack returns to his team's side in time to see Carter get captured and taken to Jonas. Jack spies the boy Carter helped save, wandering off and gets an idea.

Meanwhile, Carter is taken to Jonas, who is surrounded by native women. Jonas tries to convince Carter of his godship. He asks how they could turn their backs on these people, who desperately need protection from the deadly UV of the sun. Carter argues to him that posing as God would not help the natives. Jonas fires back that 'God' is all a matter of interpretation. He was giving them what they needed, a new civilization lead by their god.

Carter pulls out her pistol, trying to force him to give up and return to Earth for help. Jonas taunts her, daring her to shoot. Carter couldn't and gets her gun taken away from her.

The team followed this one boy to a stream. His name was Jamala. He thinks the SG-1 team are demons, recognizing Teal'c's Jaafa tattoo. Jack tells Jamala that Jonas is not a god, but Jamala is convinced. He tells the team that Jonas claims that he could make the sky orange and that would shield them from the UV. Teal'c speaks up, saying he is familiar with what Jonas may be talking about.

Jonas shows his pride and joy, the temple that the natives are building, believing it would be their salvation. Carter points out that the natives are dying, thanks to his cruel treatment while they're building this temple. Jonas is not moved, merely saying that this is separating the weak from the strong.

Teal'c sketches out a picture of what Jamala might be talking about. He says it could be a Go'uald device that creates a shield to filter out UV rays. The end result would turn the sky orange. Jamala sees the sketch and tells the team that he had seen similiar drawings on their cave walls.

Jonas are examining the very cave walls right now and reveals to Sam the Go'uald device he had discovered. He suspects its purpose but he needs Sam to help him make it work. Carter is threatened that if she doesn't help, the natives would be worked til death.

Jack sneaks back to rescue Connor, having traded clothing with Jamala. Daniel wants to activate the shield to prove that Jonas is not a god. However, Teal'c points out that they needed two to make it work. Teal'c, Daniel, and Jamala goes to where the second device might be.

While the three finds the device, Jack gets captured by Jonas' men before he and Connor could escape. They are brought to Jonas, who orders for their execution but Carter tries to bargain for their lives by activating the device. She managed to get it to work. Unfortuately, Jonas is not aware of the fact that he needs both to get the shield.

Teal'c and Daniel are told by Jamala that Jack and Connor are taken to the Stargate, where it was brought down to the ground like a light pool. Jonas is telling his people how they are going to bury the Stargate and be free under the shield, thanks to their god. But he first wants to return Jack and Connor, who he claimed were demons, back through the Stargate. Carter protests that without their transmittors to activate the iris, the two would be killed. Jonas doesn't care.

Carter: "You said you wouldn't kill them."
Hanson: "I'm not. I'm sending them back to Earth."
Carter: "Without sending the signal to open the iris they'll die."
Hanson: "Please, Sam. I'm having a moment here."

Just as the two are nudged towards the Stargate, Daniel and Jamala arrives. Daniel claims that he could work the god's magic, too. He tells the natives that Jonas is not a god. Anyone could use the device to prtect themselves. To prove himself, Jonas activates the device. A small orange beam shoots up, but nothing more. Daniel has Jamala shot a beam from Teal'c's staff up into the sky, which signals Teal'c to activate the second device. The sky turns orange. Jonas is proven to be a false god. Enraged, the natives turn against Jonas and grab him. They throw him down the very Stargate where he had wanted to send Jack and Connor to their doom, before.

The team prepares to return. As they gather around the Stargate, now set back up in place, the team wonders if they should tell the natives to bury the Stargate or leave it open so they could check up on them. Carter says that they had done enough damage to the natives. Troubled, she confesses to Jack about how she couldn't bring herself to shoot Jonas. Jack doesn't blame her. In fact, he understood. He told her that in killing, it would take her closer into becoming what Jonas had become.
