Thor's Hammer

The scene opens at Cheyenne Mountain. In the conference room, SG-1 is gathered along with General Hammond. Daniel has come up with a new theory about the Stargate. Daniel explains that there are two types of star gods, the tyrants and the culture-bearers. Daniel tells them that they know the Goa'uld didn't build the Stargate system. The Goa'uld just capitalized on its existence using it to gain power. Daniel points out that the benevolent gods could still be around somewhere.

Daniel uses the Vikings as an example of the good gods. Thor protected his people from the Aetans, enemies of mankind. Daniel suggests that Thor's hammer could have been an energy weapon based on the myths about it producing lightning bolts.

Jack pipes up summarizing Daniel's presentation. There could be good aliens out there technologically superior to the Goa'uld and if there are, the SGC should try and find them.

Teal'c turns the discussion from theoretical to serious grabbing everyone's attention when he tells them he recognizes the hammer sign. It belongs to a world named Sumaria. All Jaffa are taught the Stargate address for Sumaria because it is forbidden to go there. Something happened that no Goa'uld will talk about.

The General authorizes a mission to Sumaria to investigate. As SG-1 prepares to depart, General Hammond enters the embarkation room carrying a box. He gives it to Jack explaining that it's a gift for the good aliens if SG-1 finds them.

Daniel is thrilled to see it taking it out of Jack's hands. From the sounds of it, he played a large part in its inception. He tells the others the Sagan Institute was asked to create a greeting from Earth containing information about Earth's culture and religions.

On Sumaria, men are pushing a cart by the Stargate as it is activated. There's a large statue facing the gate. A few of the men seem scared, but after seeing SG-1 come through the gate, they begin laughing and pointing.

"This is different," Daniel comments taking in the scene.

"Daniel, you're on," Jack says indicating the very amused natives.

Daniel moves toward the men, but before he can speak, they begin chanting Thor's name, and a noise starts to emanate from the statue.

Jack tells Daniel to dial home. Daniel asks why, but Jack tells him it's an order. As Daniel turns to the DHD, a blue beam produced from a stone in the statue hits him. It stays on Daniel for a few seconds before moving to Sam, then Jack and settling on Teal'c. It hones in on Teal'c's midsection where his Goa'uld larvae is. Teal'c cries out as if he's in pain. Jack yells at him to move then lunges at the Jaffa intending to knock him out of the beam's path. Both Jack and Teal'c vanish. The beam shuts off, and the men run away leaving Sam and Daniel alone and confused.

Daniel is visibly upset. He tells Sam he thinks the statue is Thor's hammer. He suggests that Jack and Teal'c might be dead although he has to struggle to even voice that thought.

Sam too is upset. She thinks they should go back to Earth and bring a search team back. An approaching horse draws their attention.

The rider is a woman. She assumes they must be from Frutvang, Thor's homeworld. Sam introduces her and Daniel. The woman introduces herself as Gerwyn.

Sam tells Gerwyn about Jack and Teal'c's disappearance. The men that ran earlier told Gerwyn what transpired. She refers to Jack and Teal'c as Aetans. Gerwyn assumed Sam and Daniel brought Jack and Teal'c to Sumaria because they were Goa'ulds. Gerwyn realizes Sam and Daniel are human.

Gairwyn (to Carter and Daniel): "You're a little short for gods."

Sam explains that they come from another world called Earth. Daniel changes the reference calling Earth Midgard. Gerwyn understands this. She says that Midgard was the ancient homeworld, and that Thor brought them from Midgard to Sumaria and placed the statue there for their protection.

Daniel asks if Gerwyn knows how the statue works. She tells him she does not understand the magic. Thor is supposed to return oneday and teach them when they are ready.

Sam asks if Thor would kill a human in order to kill the Aetan. Gerwyn insists that their gods are just and wouldn't. Sam asks if there's anyone who could tell them where Jack and Teal'c are.

Gerwyn tells them about Kendra, a woman that came through the gate and was taken by the beam later to be found wandering the woods.

Sam suggests that the beam is some sort of transport device. Daniel asks where Kendra is. Gerwyn offers to guide Sam and Daniel to Kendra's home. The three set off on foot.

Meanwhile in a cave of some sort, Jack awakens. Teal'c regains consciousness a moment later. Teal'c first thought is for the larval Goa'uld he carries. Jack asks if junior's okay. Teal'c says yes, but the beam caused it pain.

A figure dressed like a Viking appears. He identifies himself as Thor, leader of the Asgard fleet. He explains that the Asgard designated Sumaria a protected planet. The Goa'uld system lords were told this.

Jack tries to tell Thor that he and Teal'c are not Goa'uld. He explains that Teal'c carries the larval Goa'uld because he has no choice.

Thor continues telling them that Goa'ulds were warned about staying away from Sumaria under the threat of death.

Jack tries again introducing himself and telling Thor that he's from Earth, but Thor continues speaking to them as though they are Goa'uld. Jack finally gets suspicious and approaches the figure waving his weapon and watching it pass through.

"Teal'c, I think we just got the answering machine."

Jack wants to move on, but Teal'c recommends they listen to the entire message. The hologram tells them to go to the Hall of Nelnack and face the hammer. Before disappearing, the hologram informs them that only the host can leave alive. Jack guesses that they've been transported to a Goa'uld trap. Teal'c agrees and tells Jack he must leave him behind. Jack refuses.

"Let's go find this Hall of Mohair or whatever it's called."

Meanwhile, Gerwyn, Sam and Daniel are continuing their journey to seek out Kendra. They come upon a cottage. They see a woman ministering to a boy. They watch her reach into a pouch and pull out a Goa'uld device. Daniel yells out in horror and reaches for his gun while Sam grabs her own weapon. Gerwyn assures them everything is okay. Kendra glances at them and then continues her ministrations. She puts on the device. It emits a gold light. She holds it over the boy's arm, says a chant, and heals his broken hand. The boy runs off as soon as she's finished.

Gerwyn, Sam, and Daniel approach. Gerwyn introduces Sam and Daniel explaining that they came through the gate from Midgard.

Sam asks about the boy. Kendra tells them that she healed him. Daniel wants to know why the boy ran off like he was afraid. Kendra shows them the scar on the back of her neck. Sam and Daniel back up alarmed.

Sam tells her when a Goa'uld takes a host, it's permanent. Kendra tells them Thor's hammer freed her from the Goa'uld.

The implications of what Kendra is telling them hits Daniel. Sam assumes it was the statue at the gate, but Kendra informs them Thor's hammer is underground in the mountains. Daniel tells Kendra about Sha'uri. They ask Kendra to help them find Jack and Teal'c.

Back in the cave Jack and Teal'c continue trying to find the Hall of Nelnack. They come across some bones and dead Goa'uld larvae. Teal'c tells Jack that some creature is responsible. Jack figures if come creature was able to get into the cave, he and Teal'c can get out the same way. After they leave, we see part of the creature moving.

At the same time at Kendra's, she's telling Sam and Daniel about the cave. Daniel asks about what being freed from the Goa'uld felt like. Kendra responds that it was nothing compared to watching herself hurt and destroy others. She explains that Jack can leave at will. Sam asks about Teal'c telling Kendra that he is Jaffa not Goa'uld. Kendra doesn't understand how they can consider a Jaffa a friend. Sam and Daniel tell Kendra about Teal'c's sacrifices. Kendra remains unconvinced, but thunder sounds, and she tells them that the Valkarie want her to help them so she agrees. Gerwyn departs.

In the cave, Jack and Teal'c enter another cavern. Jack tells Teal'c to try his staff weapon. It won't work, but Jack's gun does. The noise attracts the beast. Jack hands Teal'c his spare gun. Teal'c reflects on what the message said about only the host being able to leave alive. He suggests it might benefit Skaara and Sha'uri. Jack said he too thought of that.

Back at Kendra's, she tells Daniel and Sam to sit in her circle while she waits for a sign from Thor. Sam is clearly skeptical about the whole thing, but Daniel suggests that Kendra is probably afraid. Daniel asks about what Kendra remembers. She had some training in a temple that allowed part of her mind to remain free of the Goa'uld's control. Daniel is encouraged by the idea that something of the host survives. Sam asks how Kendra came to Sumaria, a forbidden world. Kendra explains that she used the free part of her mind to convince the Goa'uld to go there. Daniel finds it amazing that Kendra was able to influence the Goa'uld she carried. Thunder rumbles and Kendra tells them it's a sign from Thor.

Back in the cave, Jack and Teal'c come face to face with the beast which speaks to them. It tells Teal'c that it is Unas, the first one. Teal'c looks disbelievingly at it saying that it does not exist.

Unas (talking to Teal'c, ignoring Jack): "Kill the human."
O'Neill: "Excuse me?"

The Unas tells Teal'c to kill Jack, a notion that doesn't go over well with the colonel. Teal'c informs the Unas that he no longer serves the Goa'uld. The Unas knocks Teal'c down and advances toward Jack. Jack shoots it, but it keeps coming after him. He shoots it again until it no longer moves. Teal'c examines the Unas declaring it dead, but after they walk away, it's eyes glow.

Kendra, Sam and Daniel set out to find the caves while inside Teal'c spins around believing he heard a sound. Jack points out that the Unas is dead. He asks if there could be another one. Teal'c says no. They would have battled to the death. Jack asks what Teal'c meant when he told the Unas it didn't exist. Teal'c explains that the Unas' were said to be the first hosts coming from the same primordial waters as the Goa'uld. The Unas were believed to be myths. Jack tells Teal'c he thought the Goa'uld preferred humans as hosts. Teal'c points out that older species have been used. Teal'c suggests the Unas might have been trapped in the cave for over a thousand years.

O'Neill:"It is dead right? We don't have to go back there and drive a stake through its chest or anything?"
Teal'c: "The old stories say Unas had great regenerative powers, but those are tales told to frighten children. It is a myth. It was dead."
O'Neill:"That's good."
Teal'c:"I believe."
O'Neill:"You believe?"
Teal'c:"I am certain."
O'Neill:"Positive?"
Teal'c:"I am."
O'Neill:"Just a myth?"
Teal'c:"A myth."

Kendra, Sam and Daniel stop. Kendra is unsure about which direction to go. Sam is frustrated. Daniel tries to be patient. While Kendra gets her bearings, Daniel again questions Kendra about what it was like when the Goa'uld was driven out of her. She tells Daniel that it was a painful battle of wills. Daniel tells Kendra that Sha'uri wasn't raised in a temple, but she is strong. Kendra tells Daniel she has hope that if he brings Sha'uri to Sumaria, she can be freed.

Jack and Teal'c continue to try to find a way out of the cave. The Unas revives, howling in pain.

O'Neill (hears Unas): "That's no myth."

Sam questions whether Kendra is misleading them. Daniel defends Kendra. Sam suggests it may not be on purpose. She points out that Daniel wants to trust Kendra because he believes she can help Sha'uri. Daniel chooses to continue following Kendra and Sam reluctantly does.

Teal'c: "If I am to die, it will be as a warrior, facing my enemy."

Kendra finally finds the exit to the caves. She is afraid. Daniel tells her she doesn't have to go any further, but she answers that Thor wishes her to try.

Jack and Teal'c finally reach the Hall of Nelnack. Jack passes through the exit, but when Teal'c tries, he's caught in an energy beam. Jack yells for him to move back out, but Teal'c can't. Jack throws himself into Teal'c and knocks them both back through. Teal'c thanks Jack. The Unas approaches. Jack is on his last magazine of ammunition.

The Unas asks why Jack didn't leave. It threatens to kill and eat both Teal'c and Jack. It lunges toward them knocking Jack down. The Unas and Teal'c struggle until Teal'c maneuvers him toward Thor's hammer.

Teal'c: "Are you considering the same tactic as I?"
O'Neill: "Teal'c, the cliché is 'Are you thinking what I'm thinking?' And the answer is yes."

Jack and Teal'c both open fire pelting the Unas with bullets trying to get it into the device.

Sam and Daniel hear the gunfire and try to get in. Kendra finds the trigger and a door opens. Teal'c pushes the Unas into Thor's hammer. Jack is able to pull Teal'c out. The Goa'uld within the Unas is destroyed, and Teal'c tells them the damage to the Unas will kill it now without the Goa'uld to heal it.

Kendra finally understands why Teal'c is called friend after watching him almost sacrifice himself destroying the Unas. Daniel and Sam introduce Kendra to Jack and Teal'c. Daniel tells them Kendra used to be a Goa'uld host.

Jack tells Daniel going through the hammer is the only way out of the cave. Daniel realizes what Jack is saying. He asks what about Skaara and Sha'uri. Jack tells him that Teal'c is there now. Teal'c offers to remain. Teal'c admits he was part of the group that took Sha'uri and Skaara. Jack tells Teal'c that he is part of their family now, and they aren't leaving him behind. Jack hands Daniel Teal'c's staff weapon telling him to try to shoot Thor's hammer from the other side.

Daniel does it, but he's devastated. Teal'c is able to walk through unharmed. Teal'c thanks Daniel understanding the sacrifice he's made.

As the team prepares to depart Sumaria, Jack reassures Gerwyn that as long as the Goa'uld believe Sumaria is still protected, they should be safe. Sam tells her if there is trouble to go to the caves. Kendra thanks them for helping her face her fears. Kendra gives Daniel a rock as a gift. Daniel remembers the Sagan Institute box. He gives it to Kendra telling her it's for Thor if he returns.

Daniel dials home.
