A coastal village on the planet Nasya is under siege by Goa'uld fighters. The villagers are racing towards the Stargate where they are being evacuated by SG-1. Carter stops to help a fallen man. She is giving him mouth to mouth when suddenly he grabs her head, pulls it down to his own, and something passes from his open mouth to hers. She pulls away gagging, then looks up with eyes that glow.
O'Neill arrives at her side to help, but the man is already dead. He pulls Carter to her feet and urges her towards the Stargate. Meanwhile Daniel rescues a badly burned Nasyan man.
The earth side of the Stargate is in a state of organized pandemonium as medics rush to the aid of the wounded. Carter, O'Neill and Teal'c pass through the Stargate just as the iris closes. Jack turns to Carter and asks if she is all right. She assures him that she is.
In the briefing room, the team is assessing the situation on Nasya. There hadn't been any Goa'uld interference on the planet for almost three centuries. The Nasyans were peaceful and willing to allow the SGC to set up a research outpost on their world. There was no warning of the attack which apparently occurred without provocation. They usually attack only civilizations that have developed far enough technologically that they are perceived as a threat to Goa'uld supremacy. Teal'c, on the other hand, says he has seen the Goa'uld wipe out entire civilizations just for the pleasure of it. Carter, who has been uncharacteristically quiet until now, implies that the reasons for the attack may not have been made apparent to Teal'c because he was "just a Jaffa". The tone of her voice implies that Teal'c is in some way inferior, and the rest of the team are taken aback by her statement. She quickly covers her fau paux, and directs the conversation away from her mistake.
There were 237 survivors of the attack, the more seriously wounded having been transferred to the Air Force University Hospital, off base. Daniel thinks it essential to determine what instigated the attack, but Hammond wants to give first priority to relocating the Nasyans. As the meeting breaks, O'Neill reminds Carter that she still needs to check into the infirmary for a post mission physical. Carter is still acting oddly out of character, and O'Neill doesn't fail to notice.
Dr. Fraiser can find nothing wrong with Carter except some bruising and irritation at the back of her throat. She tells Carter that Cassandra has been asking about her. For a moment Carter seems unsure of who Cassandra is. Fraiser tells her that Cassandra will be with her at the hospital the next afternoon and invites Carter to stop and visit her. Carter says she will.
The next day at the hospital, Fraiser is checking the Nasyan burn victim Daniel had saved. He has third degree burns over 80 per cent of his body, and Fraiser marvels that he has shown no sign of infection. Incredible she says as Carter comes in. The man should be dead. After the two women leave the Nasyan's abdomen begins to pulse with a golden glow.
Cassandra is finger-painting when Carter stops to see her. She drops what she is doing and runs to give Carter a hug. As she does her eyes grow huge and she pulls away in fear, running to the other side of the room.
Hammond and O'Neill are attempting to locate a planet suitable for relocation of the Nasyans when they receive an urgent call from Dr. Fraiser. She asks O'Neill to report to the hospital. When he arrives he finds Cassandra locked in a room. She lets O'Neill in then retreats to a corner and sinks to the floor. O'Neill sits beside her. She has been upset since she saw Carter and he asks why. Cassandra says Carter threatened to kill her if she told. O'Neill doubts Carter would have said such a thing, but Cassandra is serious. Sam loves you, he says, and would never hurt you. "She would now," Cassandra says. "She's a Goa'uld."
Back on base, Carter is headed for the Stargate. She is really impatient ant unusually sharp with Teal'c and Daniel. O'Neill arrives just as they are powering up the Stargate and orders it shut down. Carter demands to know why. Computer glitch, O'Neill lies, and as he does he injects her with a syringe he had concealed in the palm of his hand. But the shot doesn't phase her even though it contains enough sedative to 'take out an elephant.' Carter aims her gun and 'commands' them to open the Stargate, her eyes glowing as she speaks. Security guards enter the gate room and shoot her with another tranquilizer dart. Still no response. She removes a grenade from her belt, pulls the pin and tells them to open the gate or they will all die. Jack stops the guards from shooting her. O'Neill tells her no one is going through the gate. "I must go," Carter says as she collapses and Jack grabs the grenade. Guards haul Carter off to the detention area.
In the briefing room, O'Neill informs the rest of the crew that he didn't know Carter was infected. Cassandra had suspected, but Jack wasn't sure until he saw her lose it in the gate room. Fraiser thinks Cassandra was sensitive to the Goa'uld in Carter because she still has traces of naquada in her blood. But the question is how did it the Goa'uld get into Carter? Fraiser found none of the usual signs of entry in the back of Carter's neck, but noted that the bruise on the back of Carter's throat could have been the entry point. The soft tissue there would allow easy access to the brain stem. O'Neill remembers she was giving a Nasyan mouth to mouth resucitation just before they evacuated the planet, and that the man had died. Fraiser immediately decides that if the Goa'uld can infect a human with out leaving any external signs, they will have to start giving every one who returns through the gate an MRI or ultrasound. Daniel wants to know why a Goa'uld was in a Nasyan in the first place, and Teal'c warns that Carter might already have planted a destructive device on the base. But what are we going to do about Carter? O'Neill is determined that they can rid her of the Goa'uld even though they failed in their attempt to do the same with Kowalski. In the meantime they do not want Maybourne to find out or he will whisk her away for study. Hammond puts Jack in charge of interrogating Carter to find out what the Goa'uld is doing here.
Back at the hospital, Dr. Jacobs enters the room of the badly burned Nasyan in order to prep him for an ultrasound when the man attacks the doctor, choking him.
At the same time Daniel is visiting another of the Nasyan survivor, a woman named Talia. Daniel shows her a picture of the man the Goa'uld inside Carter came from. Another of the Nasyans recognized him and they found the picture in the video library. Talia acknowledges that he is her husband, but she was completely unaware that he had a symbiote inside of him. She assures Daniel that he did not act strangely, nor did his eyes glow, but he did have a small injury at the back of his neck a couple months before.
As Daniel is leaving he passes the room where the burned Nasyan was but doesn't notice he is out of his bed. The man removes his bandages to reveal a face that is completely healed. He then spits out a ring similar to the ribbon device and places it on his right hand. Later when Fraiser comes to check the Nasyan burn victim, she finds a bandaged man in his bed.
O'Neill is not enthused about his coming interrogation of "Carter". Teal'c advises him to assault the Goa'uld's ego, make him appear foolish. Use his arrogance against him, as pride is the Goa'uld's greatest weakness. And his final advice is when you speak to Carter, do not see your friend. How do you do that, O'Neill asks.
"Carter" is behind bars, standing in the middle of her cell when O'Neill arrives. O'Neill, speaking to the Goa'uld, tells her she really screwed up, really blew it. The Goa'uld replies 'you are weak' Who's behind bars right now, Jack asks. Your tactics will not work she counters. You must let me go. No, O'Neill says. The Goa'uld in Carter asks to be allowed to go through the Stargate. She says she will find another host and let Carter return unharmed. You can do that, leave a host without killing them, O'Neill is curious now. It is difficult, but I will try. I may die, the Goa'uld says. The Nasyan died. O'Neill reminds her. He was already dying. Carter's mind would be intact, she would return as you knew her before. Jack can't trust her. She also tells O'Neill that the attacking Goa'uld would not have killed her because she is too valuable. Which is why we can't let you go, O'Neill concludes. Suddenly Sam is herself, and she's telling O'Neill that the Goa'uld is telling the truth, and she begs him to believe her but he can't. What will it take, the Goa'uld asks as O'Neill walks away.
Teal'c comes next to see Carter. The Goa'uld 'Carter' asks him to help convince the humans to release him and offers to provide valuable information in return, information that may divert a future attack. The Tau'ri have become too powerful and the System Lords will not allow such progress to go unchecked. More powerful assaults will be planned, he reasons. Teal'c tells the Goa'uld the Tau'ri believe he is there to plant the seed of that attack. "Not all Goa'uld are the same," 'Carter' assures Teal'c, there are a few that oppose the System Lords and their works. He asks if Teal'c has heard of the Tok'ra. "All Goa'uld seek power," Teal'c says. "Some seek power for a greater purpose," 'Carter' replies. Not every Goa'uld is an enemy to the people of this planet. "The Tok'ra are real." "I have never met one," Teal'c says. "You have now, I am Jolinar of Malk Shur." Teal'c leaves without further word.
At hospital Dr. Fraiser asks the whereabouts of Dr. Jacobs as she is checking bloodwork. As soon as she looks at the blood work for the burn patient in 412 she realizes the bandage wrapped patient in 412 is not the same person who was admitted to the hospital. Racing to his room she peels the bandages off his face revealing that he is actually an unconscious Dr. Jacobs.
Teal'c tells O'Neill about the Tok'ra, but they still can not be sure Jolinar is who he claims to be. O'Neill tells Jolinar that one of the Nasyans they brought back was badly burned, but somehow he just got up out of his hospital bed and disappeared.
It must be the Ashrak, Jolinar says. Ashrak means hunter, Teal'c translates. The Ashrak is a Goa'uld assassin sent by the System Lords to kill Jolinar. Jolinar once tried to destroy a system lord but was himself defeated when Apophis joined the battle. He escaped but is now wanted. He is also part of the Tok'ra which means resistance, a small group of Goa'uld who resist the system lords. Bra'tac had told Teal'c about them. O'Neill is still not convinced Jolinar isn't lying even though there has been no sabotage, but it does explain why Jolinar hid among the Nasyans and did not reveal his true nature. The bottom line is, O'Neill concludes, there may be a Goa'uld on a mission to kill Carter and no one even knows what he looks like.
Daniel finally goes to see Carter. Jolinar asks if he cares about Samantha Carter as much as O'Neill and Teal'c. Yes, Daniel admits. Yet this is the first time you have come to see me, Jolinar taunts him. Daniel has come to find out if Jolinar can describe the Ashrak. "I will know his face only in the moments before he tortures me to death," Jolinar warns grimly, "killing your friend along with me." He will find me, Jolinar says. Trusting me is the only was to save your friend. Alive I can be a powerful ally. "Then give us more than empty promises." Daniel demands. "I can give her back to you," Jolinar says. Daniel thinks he is talking about Samantha, but Jolinar corrects him. He means Sha're. He knows where Sha're can be found.
As the Nasyans are being evacuated from the hospital, the Ashrak has assumed the guise of a soldier and assumed a place on one of the trucks, controlling the driver with the ringlike device.
O'Neill will not be convinced by Jolinar's claims. He thinks the Goa'uld is playing on is Daniel's greatest weakness, his love for Sha're. Teal'c believes in Jolinar, and Daniel is quickly beginning convinced. Jolinar said he would never take a host by force. The Tok'ra take only host humans who are dying and chose to live in coexistence with the Goa'uld. But O'Neill will never, never trust a Goa'uld.
The first group of Nasyans arrive at the Cheyenne Mountain complex and with them the Ashrak who uses his mind altering technique to pass through the security system into the SGC. As the first group of refugees is about to go through the Stargate, Hammond gets a call from the infirmary. It seems the driver of the truck that brought them blacked out and didn't remember driving to the base. All the security cameras are down so they cannot verify who entered the complex with the Nasyans.
Before Security can react the Ashrak has located Jolinar. Jolinar is not afraid to die. The Tok'ra continue to grow strong. The Ashrak uses his ringlike device, the harakash, to destroy Jolinar and leaves Carter near death. She is found and rushed to the infirmary where Fraiser manages to stabilize her. An EEG reveals two separate brainwave patterns so closely interlinked that the death of Jolinar will mean the death of Carter.
Daniel, unaware of what is happening, is in the gate room saying good by to the Nasyans. The Ashrak arrives and Daniel recognizes him from the hospital. The Ashrak takes Daniel hostage, holding a gun to his head and demanding that the gate be reactivated. Hammond refuses. Teal'c appears with a zat gun, apologizes to Daniel before shooting, then fires on him. As he falls away, Teal'c fires a second time killing the Ashrak.
While this is happening, Fraiser manages to separate the two brainwave patterns in Carter's head and as Jolinar dies, Carter's heart restarts. O'Neill is ecstatic, and congratulates her on beating the Goa'uld. Jolinar is dead, but Carter doesn't feel like she has beaten anything. The Goa'uld gave its life for me she says. He saved me. O'Neill is stunned by her comment.
After Jolinar dies, Carter is still in the infirmary. She depressed and unresponsive to Daniel's attempts to talk to her. The Goa'uld is being reabsorbed by her body, and in time she will recover. Cassandra is finally convinced that all Carter needs is time, and Carter tearfully responds to Cassandra's presence.
