Need

People are gathered about a Stargate on what must be an alien world. They are dressed in priestly robes and wave an incense-like container in some sort of ceremony. One of them is dialing the DHD and opens the Gate, as another lifts a container of dark material. The planet at first glimpse appears similar to Chulak. SG-1 looks on, hidden behind bushes. Teal’c recognizes the container being moved toward the Gate as raw naquada, highly valued by the Goa’uld. The "priests" carry the naquada to the Gate at the end of a long pole, bow, and send it through. Carter reminds O’Neill that they could really use some naquada, and he responds "Well, maybe there’s some more."

As they follow the returning party, they come upon an all-too-familiar sight! A large pyramid, much like Ra’s pyramid on Abydos, and what seems to be an opening to a mine next to it. The people walking back are guarded by Jaffa, carrying staff weapons. There are also priests, some raggedly dressed people and one figure in a hooded, golden robe.

Daniel becomes curious as this hooded person breaks off from the group and heads alone into the forest. He begins to follow. The person removes her hood - revealing a beautiful woman. She glances back toward SG-1. Had she heard or sensed their presence? She proceeds to the edge of a mountainous cliff - opens her arms and begins to sway. "She’s going to jump!" O’Neill whispers. Without hesitation, Daniel bolts forward and grabs her back, just as she is about to fall. Startled, she lets out a scream, alerting her Jaffa guards, who come running. O’Neill is visibly upset, not knowing what to do. The woman looks at Daniel, almost as if she recognizes him! The Jaffa arrive, point their staff weapons at Daniel and command "Stay away from the Princess!" The rest of SG-1 aim their guns, but Jaffa reinforcements come up from behind. They are surrounded. The Princess warns SG-1 to drop their guns or the guards will kill Daniel. Reluctantly, they do so.

The scene shifts to a great hall inside the pyramid. SG-1 is being let in, manacled hand and foot, by Jaffa guards. "What were you thinking!?" O’Neill barks to Daniel. "I thought she’d be grateful!" he tersely responds. "She was trying to kill herself!" O’Neill answers, having the last word. Jackson kneels immediately to the Jaffa command, while Jack says he’d rather not as he has a "cartilage problem, ACL thing." Then, WHACK! The guard hits Jack in the back of his knees, forcing him to kneel. "Acck. That helps," croaks O’Neill. Slowly, Sam and Teal’c also kneel. "My father, Pyrus the Godslayer, wants to know who you are," the Princess announces. She is standing next to a throne. Seated upon it is an angry-looking old man dressed in royal robes.

Daniel responds, "We are peaceful explorers." Pyrus stands to confront Jackson, "You attacked my daughter!" "No!" Daniel answers. He implores to the Princess, "Tell him!" She is silent and drops her eyes. Pyrus approaches SG-1, "Only one of you is Jaffa. . . Who sent you?" O’Neill responds, "We’re from a planet called Earth." "What Goa’uld rules there?" asks Pyrus. "None" answers Jack. "Liar!" Pyrus responds excitedly. "You are thieves. Tell me the truth or you will die!" SG-1 is silent. "Put them in the mines!" Pyrus commands. SG-1 is roughly dragged out as Daniel protests, "No! Wait! We’re not thieves! Wait! Please?!" he directs one last time to the Princess as she silently looks away.

SG-1 is working the mine. Under torchlight, in chains, swinging crude hammers they are hitting the rock. Daniel seems upset and preoccupied with his own thoughts. Carter tells Jack, "Colonel, he isn’t a goa’uld and these aren’t real Jaffa." "How do you know?" Jack asks. "First clue was his voice. . . Sir, I can’t really explain, but when he touched me. . . I just knew. . . I felt it, or to be more accurate, I didn’t feel it. I think it has to do with the goa’uld that invaded me. . . Lately I get this weird feeling when I’m near Teal’c." Sam reveals. Jack quips, "Hey! Who doesn’t?" Teal’c reacts, "I agree with Captain Carter, the ruler here is not a goa’uld." Daniel finally apologizes, "I’m really sorry you guys, this is totally my fault."

A "Jaffa" steps up disturbed that they are not working, "You will meet your quota for the day, or you will not eat!" Jack sarcastically offers, "You know I’ve seen a lot of union violations around here. . . I should speak with your supervisor." The Jaffa impostor swings his staff, knocking Jack down, "You will work!" "Hi ho, hi ho, back to work." Jack responds. They do not challenge Teal’c however.

It is now night and SG-1 is dirty and exhausted. Daniel says he can’t move anymore as other mineworkers begin to file past them. The Jaffa orders, "Put down your tools!" as they begin to unchain SG-1. The Jaffa asks O’Neill - equally sarcastically - "How does your leg feel now?" Jack exchanges glances with Teal’c as a sign and responds "Much better!" Jack and Teal’c attack the guards with their hammers. Grabbing a staff weapon, they shoot several more guards. "Let’s go!" O’Neill yells. Daniel is slow to get up, he is still shackled at his feet. "Let’s go Daniel!" O’Neill implores. "I’m coming!" Daniel yells as he hobbles for the exit. Another guard aims his weapon at Daniel. He cringes against a wall for cover, but the blast hits the rocks above him sending an avalanche of rock down on top of him. Jack hears this and runs back. He uncovers Daniel’s face. Carter feels for a pulse and says he’s alive. He is, however unconscious and buried under a pile of rock. Jack tells Sam and Teal’c to leave, but its too late. Two more guards block the exit. They are once again trapped, with Daniel severely injured!

The Princess and her father are seen talking. "Foolish child! They must have been sent by some distant, evil God!" Pyrus explodes. "Or they are here to raid our mine and we can spare none of our naquada! It grows more scarce by the day!" The Princess appeals to her father, "I will not put our world in jeopardy! Please, believe in me!" Pyrus turns and leaves with no response. The Princess opens a large, stone tomb and a goa’uld sarcophagus slides out. It slowly opens, revealing Daniel inside! He wakes up, looking fine, but very confused. The Princess matter-of-factly asks, "Do you feel better?" Daniel responds "What’s going on?" "You were badly wounded," the Princess offers. "My friends?" Daniel inquires. Again, matter-of-factly, the Princess answers, "They were recaptured." Daniel tells her his name, and as he stands you can see he is dressed in royal robes. "Why am I wearing this?" he asks. The Princess tells him that he can call her Shyla and in return for saving his life, he should not try to escape. She asks Daniel to forgive her for not telling the truth about what happened at the cliff, as her father would not understand.

Daniel tries to put the picture together, "So, you aren’t goa’uld, but you are running a naquada mine, and you’ve got yourselves a goa’uld sarcophagus." As they talk, the Princess is happy to hear that Daniel has used a sarcophagus before, "a few times too many" Daniel adds. He asks for his glasses and she gives them to him, but one lens has cracked in the accident. He puts them on anyway, appearing a bit comical but cute! Shyla smiles at Daniel saying mysteriously, "I just know I’ve done the right thing."

In the mines, Jack is feeling guilty. As they work, Carter tells Jack, "He needed medical attention. It wasn’t your fault, sir, we had to take the opportunity when we did." "I know." Jack responds as he takes his frustration out with the hammer and rock. He is offered brown water to drink, which he does with gusto. "I've had worse!" he explains.

Daniel and Shyla walk in the woods. She wants to hear about other worlds and all of Daniel’s adventures. Daniel remains concerned about his friends. She puts off his concerns by saying her father is still convinced they have a "nefarious" purpose there, but - almost adoringly - she adds, "We will convince him you are decent, honest people who will bring no harm to our world." Daniel is most anxious to talk to her father immediately. She again deflects his request saying her father is not well. Firmly, Daniel states, "I don’t want to spoil this. . . rapport we have going here." "That sounds almost romantic," Shyla interrupts. Daniel is uncomfortable. He quickly tells her that he is grateful she saved his life, but he senses she’s done this because, "You are my destiny!" Shyla responds. To which Daniel eloquently responds, "Whou. . . ah. . . what?"

Shyla tells him of a prophecy her mother had made when she was still alive. Her mother told her a great man would come from beyond the sun - just for her. Shyla was testing her mother’s prophecy by wishing on the cliff, and Daniel saved her at just the right moment. She tells him, he can not deny that is fate!

SG-1 is still slaving in the mine as Daniel visits them. "Hi guys!" he says. Carter says "Daniel!" They are all exhausted and surprised to see him. "Surprisingly difficult to kill you, isn’t it?" Jack quips. Daniel tells them how his life was saved and that the Princess has a crush on him. Daniel asks them for more time, telling them that he must convince Pyrus before they can be released. It obviously makes him uncomfortable to see them like that, so he turns and leaves. Jack yells after him, "Glad you’re OK!"

Daniel sits at the table of a large dining hall. He is being served a large feast. Pyrus and Shyla enter. She is wearing a crown. "I killed Goa’uld who ruled here." Pyrus grumpily offers as he eats, "700 years ago." Daniel didn’t realize the sarcophagus could sustain human life so long. The Princess assures Daniel she is young by comparison, and hasn’t needed the sarcophagus to sustain her life. She also explains why the people worship her father, "He liberated them from the evil god." Daniel asks why he keeps his people working in the mine. "So the evil gods won’t come," the Princess answers. "So, this is a masquerade!" Daniel realizes. "No wonder you are paranoid about strangers! You are afraid of being found out!" Pyrus announces he must sleep, and begins to leave.

"What about my friends?" Daniel begs. "Kill them!" Pyrus responds. "What? No!" Daniel reacts. Shyla "reminds" her father that he wants to keep them alive, working constantly in the mines as an example to the other workers. He doesn’t recall having said that, but shrugs in agreement and leaves. Daniel shakes his head in disbelief. What is he to do now?

Daniel and Shyla are alone in the throne room. He tells her it is unacceptable for him to be up there with her while his friends are down in the mines. She tells Daniel it will take some time before she can change her father’s mind. Jackson begins to realize that she is using his friends to keep him there! He promises, if she releases his friends, he won’t leave - he’ll stay and get to know her better! "Then you feel as I do." she responds. She kisses him, and he willing responds with a kiss back. Then he draws away, and she asks if she shouldn’t have done that. Curiously he says, "No. It’s fine! It’s just. . ." "Maybe you’re not fully recovered?" Shyla offers. She opens the sarcophagus and entices Daniel to enter it. She tells him he will feel better than he has ever felt. She wants him to demonstrate that he trusts her completely, so that she will also trust him. He very reluctantly enters the sarcophagus and appears to hold his breath as the panels close over him.

SGC receives a message from SG-1, "Situation remains the same. Need more time to resolve situation diplomatically. Daniel Jackson out."

Another day in the mines. Even Teal’c is noticeably fatigued. Jackson enters in an agitated state. His demeanor has changed, even his hair is curled, and his eyes are wide staring, highly excited. He strides in to be greeted by Jack’s "What the hell is going on?" "Oh! Ya..Ya..Ya! I’m sorry! Ummm. . . I’m still working on getting you guys out." Daniel blurts. O’Neill tries to tell him they are dying, and he only wants to talk about the wonders of the sarcophagus! He says it is amazing what it does if you use it when you are already healthy! He points out that he no longer needs glasses for one thing. He admits to using it nine or ten times, and it makes everything seem "so clear! I feel as if I could do anything!" His eyes grow wilder, he is obviously not in control of himself. Jack tries to bring him back to reality, "One thing. . . you only have to do one thing, and if you can’t handle that we’re going to break out of here without you!" To which Daniel responds, "She wants me to marry her." Jack tries again to bring him back, "Look!" Daniel wheels about, points at O’Neill and shouts, "No! You look, Jack! I’ve got everything under control, OK? You never show me any respect! Your way didn’t work, now I’m handling it!"

Standing with his hands on his hips and his feet placed apart, Daniel appears very powerful. He talks to Shyla about her father possibly dying soon. He tells Shyla he has never felt better anywhere in his life. He always felt out of place on his planet. He wants to stay and help her change things on her world.

Carter wakens suddenly. She has had a vision of Jolinar’s memories. She reveals, "The Tokra - the resistance - does not use the sarcophagus. It does something to your mind - takes something from you." She asks Teal’c what Ka’lash is. "It is goa’uld, meaning one’s soul," Teal’c responds. "We have to stop Daniel!" Carter pleads to O’Neill.

A very dirty, sick, debilitated Jack is dragged before Daniel, who lounges on the throne. "The man who would be king!" Jack mutters as the Jaffa hit him, forcing him to kneel in great pain. As Jack writhes on the floor, Daniel approaches, giggling, "Hi Jack!" He waves the guards away. O’Neill can barely speak, "We’re losing the battle down there you know." He tells Jackson if he keeps using the sarcophagus he’ll go "dark-side" on them, if he hasn’t already. Daniel, oblivious to all of this, happily tells Jack they will be going home the next day, as he has agreed to marry Shyla. He told her he has to go home to straighten out a few things, and the team gets to go with him. "She loves me!" Daniel proudly adds.

Shyla is seen confiding to her father, "Daniel will come back to me. He can’t live without me anymore!"

SG-1 departs, as Shyla apologizes and offers her friendship. Daniel lovingly kisses her and promises to be back, soon! As they return to SGC, O’Neill sums up the mission to General Hammond, "We had a lovely time! Carter picked up some naquada. Teal’c made friends, as usual. Daniel got engaged! I’m gonna hit the shower."

Daniel and Sam talk as she examines the naquada samples. He is very nervous and fidgety. He has a feeling of needing to "get out of there." Sam tells him his system is "out of whack." He paces, rubbing his hands together. He is thinking constantly of Shyla. "You have a wife," Sam offers. Daniel impatiently responds, "Had - I had a wife. How long am I supposed to wait? Even if I find Sha’re someday, what are the chances she’s ever going to be the same again?"

Sam tries to explain to an increasingly agitated Daniel that the effects of the sarcophagus are like a narcotic. He doesn’t think that’s so bad. Sam really wants to convince him, so she continues and tells Daniel perhaps that’s partly what makes the goa’uld as bad as they are! The sarcophagus increases their aggression, makes them more irrational! Daniel is in constant motion now. "Look at you! It’s like you need a fix! It’s changed you!" Sam points out to him. He remains obsessed with going back to Shyla. Finally, Sam says "She used us to get you addicted!" Daniel reacts with anger, smashing lab equipment and telling Sam she must never have known what true love is!

As Sam is trying to explain to General Hammond why Daniel should be confined, Jackson appears and offers his resignation. He wants to return to P3R636, but as he asks this, he collapses. Dr. Fraiser gives him a sedative and reveals that he is going through massive, physical withdrawal. Daniel suddenly sits up on the stretcher and screams, "I have to go back! You’re killing me!" He is subdued as Dr. Fraiser tells SG-1 that Daniel’s cells can’t function properly and it is worsening each hour. Teal’c is certain the sarcophagus is the only way to heal him. Sam emphatically disagrees, and asks them to wait a little longer.

Daniel is now in an isolation cell, being held on a stretcher in leather restraints. He pulls against the restraints, moaning. Fraiser tells O’Neill she is somewhat hopeful. The lab tests show Daniel might be turning the corner. She goes to give Daniel more sedative. As she does this, Daniel jumps up, breaks his bonds and overpowers both the doctor and his armed guard in a wild, almost murderous frenzy. He runs off. Jack sees that Daniel is missing on the video camera, sounds an alarm and pursues him.

Jack follows Daniel into a supply closet. Suddenly, the overhead light is shot out and Jack ducks for cover. "Daniel! Are you trying to kill me?" O’Neill shouts. "You’re trying to kill me!" Daniel answers. "I’m going back," Daniel continues. "You don’t have to! Fraiser says you’re getting better!" Jack desperately offers. "You’re lying!" Daniel screams. "Why would I do that?" Jack yells back. Daniel tries to bolt for the open door and Jack grabs him. They fight, destroying the supply room. Daniel manages to break away, and aims his gun unsteadily at Jack. "What are you going to do Daniel? Do you want to kill me?" Jack boldly asks. Daniel’s face says no, but he continues to point the gun at O’Neill. "Oh God! Look at you! I know what this is!" Jack says. "I know what it is like. You can get through it!" Daniel begins to cry and collapses, sobbing. Jack hugs and comforts him on the floor. Daniel weeps uncontrollably as Jack hangs on.

Some time later, the team is seen ready to depart for another world. Daniel appears and offers a different destination. He wants to return to P3R636 to free the people enslaved there. Hammond very much wants access to the mines but doesn’t want to bring in an army, so Daniel offers him a "diplomatic solution." He tells Jack he needs to go back, and Jack tells the General he wants Daniel back on the team!

The final scene shows a weeping Shyla. Her father has finally died. Daniel enters, tells her he is sorry for everything and offers his help so she can lead her people, without becoming what her father was. He tells her she can not use the sarcophagus anymore. "It will be bad. . . but you don’t have to go through it alone," he gently, but sternly offers. She destroys the sarcophagus with a staff weapon. Daniel embraces her, and tenderly kisses her forehead.
