Family

The Stargate is cycling as a voice announces "Unscheduled incoming travelers." The Gate tech tells General Hammond that SG-1’s iris deactivation code has come through, but SG-1 is clearly visible in the control room! Putting the puzzle together, they reason it must be Bra'tac, who is only supposed to use the remote device and code in an emergency. Teal’c wonders if Bra'tac is under attack, and Sam responds "From who? Apophis and Klorel were killed!" The iris is opened as the marine guard stands ready, weapons aimed. Bra'tac emerges from the Gate, asking, "Hammond of Texas, will you give me leave to enter your compound?" Jack is first to greet Bra'tac, but he doesn’t appear willing to chat. Jack comments "I take it this isn’t a social call." Bra'tac approaches a much-pleased Teal’c, but quickly delivers him bad news. His wife is safe, but his son, Rya'c, has been taken by Apophis!

In a briefing room, SG-1 and Bra'tac try to figure out how Apophis could still be alive. General Hammond points out that O’Neill’s report clearly states that Apophis was killed aboard his ship. "Yes," says Jack "we saw the thing blow!" Bra'tac offers that he has heard Apophis and Klorel escaped through the onboard Stargate just before the explosion. Teal’c knows that the person Apophis truly wants is Teal’c, the traitor, and that is why he has taken Rya'c. Bra'tac agrees and excitedly tells SG-1 that "nearly all the Serpent Guards loyal to Apophis were killed on that ship. Apophis has returned to Chulak in shame." Apparently Apophis is trying to reinstate his power before the System Lords send another Goa’uld to rule in his place. Bra'tac reveals that Chulak is in chaos and Apophis is weak. He thinks if they act now, they can rescue the boy. General Hammond doesn’t want to send his best people into a trap. O’Neill points out, "Of course it ’s a trap, sir, and in knowing it is a trap, we can avoid it!" The general feeling is that Apophis will never be more vulnerable. Jack, filled with anger and a desire for revenge, pleads with Gen. Hammond to let them act quickly in order to rescue Teal’c’s kid "and nail this mother...Goa’uld in one swipe!" Hammond wants to remove the source of Teal’c’s vulnerability by rescuing his family. "Colonel, you have a go...Get Apophis if you can, but the prime directive is to bring Teal’c’s family back to Earth."

The Stargate on Chulak has fired up. Several Jaffa and a Serpent Guard stand ready with staff weapons leveled. A gas canister is thrown through, emitting a yellow cloud which chokes and knocks the guards unconscious. The SG-1 team and Bra'tac emerge in hooded robes and gas masks. Bra'tac leads the team to Drey-Auc’s new home, it is large and luxurious. "How can she afford such a home?" Teal’c wonders. Bra'tac does not know. Drey-Auc comes to greet the visitors to her home. As Teal’c removes his hood, she nervously says his name, then embraces him. She knows why he has come, "I was alone when they came! I tried to stop them!" Teal’c tells her he is certain she did all she could.

A distinguished man comes down the stairs, greeting Bra'tac and the warriors from the TA’RI. SG-1 has become somewhat of a legend on Chulak! He introduces himself as Fro'tak of the High Cliffs. Jack responds "Jack of the Windy City! This is Jackson and Carter." Teal’c thanks his old friend for sheltering his wife and son. Fro'tak abruptly informs him that "when it appeared as if you may never return…that you may in fact be dead…Drey-Auc had her marriage removed!…She is now my wife!" Teal’c takes one second to react then begins to throttle Fro'tak. Jack and Bra'tac jump in to separate the two men. Jack reminds Teal’c "We came here for your son! This doesn’t help!" Teal’c cools down a little, as Fro'tak and Drey-Auc go outside to give him some time to take in the bad news. Bra'tac swears he did not know, or he would have told Teal’c before coming there. Jack wants to know if Fro’ tac can be trusted not to turn them in. Teal’c is certain he can not be trusted. Bra'tac believes he can be trusted, but suggests keeping a close eye on him at all times. Teal’c only wants to kill him. Jackson tries to give Teal’c a sense of perspective, "Maybe, in a way, you should be thanking him!" Daniel thinks Teal’c’s family has a better life now…they no longer have to barely survive in the camps as outcasts, due to Teal’c’s betrayal of Apophis. Bra'tac asks for Teal’c’s word that he will not try to kill Fro’ tac, to commit "Del’mar O Kim". Teal’c gives his word, but remains very upset. "Del’mar O Kim?" Jack asks Daniel. "Revenge by the wearer of horns" Daniel translates, "the Jaffa term for being a cuckold (a man whose wife has been unfaithful)!" Teal’c tells Drey-Auc he will find their son and bring him home and after that, "I will never lay eyes on you again!"

Drey-Auc joins Teal’c in an outside garden "How dare you judge me! And dishonor Fro'tak in his own house!" Teal’c wants her to be silent. Teal’c is certain he is the wronged party, and that all he has done has been for the future of his people. Drey-Auc explains that what she has done is for the future of their son! Teal’c wants to know if she has love for Fro'tak. "No" Drey-Auc flatly responds, "Fro'tak has offered our son a better life."

Fro'tak shows the team where Rya'c is being held — the West wing of the palace. They plan to go as soon as it is dark. In the palace, Bra'tac draws the guards toward SG-1. After a brief exchange of fire, they find Ry’ ac. He is not happy to see them! To the contrary, he screams to the guards for help! "The traitor is here! Help!" he fearfully calls as he breaks loose from his father’s grasp. More guards arrive, and the team must retreat. Rya'c runs away.

Drey-Auc and Fro'tak are keeping vigil at their house. The team tells Drey-Auc they were unable to bring Rya'c home. Teal’c adds that their son is now with Apophis. Jack feels he has been brainwashed. The globe "TV screen" in Drey-Auc’s house begins to waver and glow inside. Bra'tac tells them Apophis must be speaking to the people of Chulak. The wavering image of Apophis appears, announcing that rumors of his defeat are false, brought by those who wish to destroy this world. He brings Rya'c to his side, and Rya'c proclaims "My father is not a hero...he is evil...he turned away from our god! He is a ha’taca!" Apophis offers a large bounty for Teal’c and those who are with him. Rya'c also announces that his mother is being held prisoner by the evil ones, and adds that her name is Drey-Auc of the Morning Champha Groves. Teal’c sees a hidden message in Rya'c’s last words. Drey-Auc is of the Kordi Plains! Champha Groves is a place Teal’c and Rya'c used to play together. Teal’c is certain Rya'c is fighting the brainwashing and wants to be rescued in the Groves come morning. Bra'tac and O’Neill aren’t so sure a child could be capable of a plan that sophisticated, and call it wishful thinking.

A loud knock is heard at the door. Drey-Auc moves everyone into a hiding spot, while Fro'tak answers. A large contingent of Jaffa have orders to search for the traitor and his friends. They search and find nothing. Fro’ tac is silent. After they leave, Teal’c tells Fro'tak that until that moment, he wasn’t sure he could be trusted. Fro'tak responds "We are old friends! I hope you never lose your trust in me!" Jack and Sam exchange a doubtful look.

Drey-Auc comes to Teal’c while everyone is sleeping. They kiss. Fro'tak sees this, and suddenly leaves the house. O’Neill hears him and follows. Fro’ tac goes to the palace, and tells a Serpent Guard he will lead them to the traitor Teal’c and those that are with him! Jack appears and fires on the guard with a zat gun. Fro'tak turns to attack O’Neill, and he is forced to fire on Fro'tak as well. Fro'tak will not keep silent, and screams for Jaffa. Having no choice, Jack finishes him off with two more shots of the zat gun. He is vaporized! The palace is sealed off!

It is now early morning at Drey-Auc’s house. A loud knocking is again heard at the door. Bra'tac goes to answer and protests as a Serpent Guard forcefully enters! The helmet opens, revealing Jack inside! "No wonder these guys are always cranky!" Jack then tells Drey-Auc that Fro'tak tried to turn them in. He had to deal with it. Drey-Auc blames herself for making vows she could not keep. No one knows what to say, so Jack brings them all back to the task at hand "The sun’s coming up...let’s get the kid!"

In the groves, Rya'c appears escorted by an armed contingent. The team, in hiding, has them encircled. Quickly, the guards are killed. Rya'c is happy to see Teal’c now! No one can accept how easy it was to free Rya'c and how quickly he has turned around. Teal’c doesn’t want to see any of this — believing instead in the strength of his son to oppose Apophis. Still full of doubt, they approach the Stargate. Drey-Auc joins them. Everyone becomes even more concerned. The Gate has only two guards posted, even though Apophis clearly knows they are there! It is all too easy. They debate what to do. Rya'c tries to convince Jack that he has fooled Apophis. Sam and Daniel point out that even if it is a trick, they can’t stay on Chulak. They should take advantage of the light guard and escape now. They can’t very well abandon Rya'c either. So, they take the gamble and all leave together, saying farewell to Bra'tac.

At SGC, Dr. Frasier has tested Rya'c and found nothing abnormal. No naquada bomb as in Cassandras’ case. Everything seems fine. Jack still wants to put a guard on Rya'c. Meanwhile, Rya'c is very anxious to see the outside world. Drey-Auc notices and confides to Teal’c that Rya'c lost two teeth training with Bra'tac, but they are no longer missing! Everyone is alerted now, and as Dr. Frasier proposes taking a blood sample, Rya'c senses something has gone wrong! He reacts "NO!" and struggles to run from Teal’c screaming "I will kill you all!" The doctor tranquilizes him. Rya'c wakes up in a cell with his mother. He is much agitated and full of hatred. "You can not stop me! I hate you!" he yells as he bites down hard, then feels his teeth. "They’re gone," Drey-Auc tells him. Dr. Frasier tells everyone the teeth were fake — hollow. Inside each tooth was a different biological organism, like a virus. When combined, they become the deadliest thing ever seen! It would make anthrax look like a cold virus! If Rya'c’s teeth had broken outside the SGC complex, the viruses would have combined and spread around the Earth in a week, killing all life!

Now that the threat to Earth has been eliminated, SG-1 tries to figure out how to help Rya'c. Teal’c tries to deprogram him. He tells Rya'c Apophis is a false god. Rya'c retorts "He is my god!" Teal’c persists, telling Ry’ ac that Apophis has lied. He sent Rya'c on a mission where he would have killed himself. Rya'c can only scream in return "You lied! You said you would come back! You never did!" Teal’c appeals to Rya'c’s memories of them as a family, and their family love. Rya'c responds by spitting in his father’s face!

As a last resort, Jack proposes using ECT (electroconvulsive, or shock, therapy) to break through the brainwashing. Dr. Frasier is worried that it might kill the larval goa’uld, and that would kill Rya'c. Teal’c asks if ECT is similar to the zatni’cetel gun discharge. Jack believes it is. Teal’c knows this will not kill Rya'c nor the symbiote. They decide to try. Teal’c tells Drey-Auc it will cause Rya'c much great pain. She trusts Teal’c to know what is best. Teal’c asks Rya'c to forgive him, then shoots him once with the zat gun! Rya'c writhes in pain, then lies still. Drey-Auc and Teal’c sing a lullaby — and as Rya'c joins in — they know he will be OK! He doesn’t know where they are, and is truly overjoyed to see his father!

In the embarkation room, SG-1 is sending Drey-Auc and Rya'c to the Land of Light for refuge. Jack gives Rya'c a baseball mitt. Not knowing what to do with it, the boy puts it on as a hat! Jack lets him know he will visit and teach him a few things. Teal’c is accompanying them, and says he will return soon. They gratefully look back at SG-1, then disappear into the Gate.
