An image on the MALP viewer screen is seen, revealing an alien Stargate area with a DHD and pots of flickering flame. A curious man approaches the probe and stares into the camera lens - it is Sha're's father - Kasuf! Daniel tells SG-1 and General Hammond the video was from just a few minutes ago, "Kasuf has unburied the Stargate and is waiting…for me!" It has been one Abydos year, to the day, and Daniel wishes to return - to keep his word to Kasuf. Jack wonders whether Kasuf should know that Daniel hasn't found Sha're and that she is a Goa'uld. Daniel is certain he must tell his father-in-law that he hasn't given up looking - that he never will - and as family, he deserves to know what's happened to Sha're. Gen. Hammond is undecided as to what he should do. Jack and Sam are scheduled to appear in Washington, D.C. for a ceremony with the President. Daniel reminds him, if he doesn't go now, the Gate will be buried for good. He reassures the General that he will be very safe in Teal'c's company, after all he lived with the people of Abydos for a year and they were wonderful to him! Jack enthusiastically remembers them as a great people and jokes to Sam that they should blow off the medal ceremony and join the boys! General Hammond smiles and tells Daniel and Teal'c to leave when ready.
The Gate engages, as Daniel, wearing his Abydan robes, and Teal'c prepare to leave. Jack reminds Daniel they will join him in a couple of days. The much- awaited journey back to Abydos begins. As Daniel and Teal'c exit the Stargate, Kasuf is there to greet them. He appears somewhat alarmed. "Don't be afraid, good father," explains Daniel "This is Teal'c." Teal'c and Kasuf exchange greetings in the Abydan language, Teal'c telling Kasuf he is honored. Down on his knees, Daniel tries gently to explain to Kasuf that he has returned without his daughter. "So it is." Kasuf simply responds. Daniel continues, "I fear my search will continue for many seasons." "Come!" commands Kasuf, abruptly leaving the pyramid. Daniel looks questioningly at Teal'c, then decides to follow.
They stroll through a pastoral village of tents and farm animals. All is peaceful and tranquil. As they enter Kasuf's tent, a woman, dressed in Abydan clothing, can be seen tending to cooking chores. All Daniel can manage to say is her name as she stands to greet them, "Sha're." Teal'c reacts immediately by raising his zat gun! Daniel reacts in puzzlement and disbelief, as he never expected to see her there and she is obviously pregnant! Kasuf moves between Teal'c and his daughter. "No! Take my life in exchange!" he bravely offers. Daniel touches Teal'c's weapon arm, half pleading and half ordering, "No one is killing anyone!" Teal'c's voice is touched with hatred, "Sha're is no longer your daughter." Daniel inquires, "Kasuf, we are in danger! How long has she been here?" "Longer than a season!" Kasuf replies. "What?!" Daniel asks incredulously. Kasuf is greatly confused, "Why are we in danger?" Sha're now steps toward Daniel. "Husband!" she calls to him. Somewhat coldly, almost businesslike, Daniel responds "I am Sha're's husband. Who are you?" "My Daniel! Please!" Sha're begs, moving closer to Daniel. Teal'c stops her and raises his gun again.
Daniel then explains to a much confused Kasuf that Sha're has been taken by a Goa'uld, and evil demon with great power. Sha're admits that what Daniel says is true, but that she has returned to her father. "Stop it!" Daniel screams. "You can't fool me! I know what you are! I've seen what you are!" Sha're begins to plead once again to Daniel, "Please, believe me!" Daniel responds "No!" Sha're is having a very hard time talking to her husband about what has happened to her, but she continues, pleading and crying. "The demon sleeps because I am with child!" Daniel reacts in shock with a renewed realization of her pregnancy. His emotions begin to overtake him as his facial expression softens. "Hear me husband!" Share continues, "The demon who has stolen by soul is called Ammonet. She sleeps for the sake of the child!" "Why?" Daniel weakly asks. "If she awakens, the child will come forth, stillborn!" Sha're pours out. Teal'c is the first to comprehend what has happened, "I've never known a Goa'uld to father a human child!" Daniel has only seconds to take this all in. He looks directly at Sha're and haltingly asks a question he does not want to hear the answer to, "Apophis is the father?!" Sha're can only cry and choke out a yes in response. Teal'c wants to know if Apophis is also on Abydos. She says no, he has hidden her away there so none of his enemies would know the true purpose of the baby. "What true purpose?" Daniel asks. She can not respond. He must ask her again what Apophis would want with a human child. She is very reluctant to respond. Tearfully she reveals "He wishes the child to one day become his new host!" Daniel asks Teal'c if that could be true, but he does not respond, appearing confused and shocked himself. Daniel next turns to Sha're, asking if it is true. She sobs, "Yes!" All the while, Kasuf has comforted Sha're. Daniel can not bring himself to hold or even touch her! Now, he tries to process all he has been told. First a look of pity, sympathy really, for Sha're, then he shakes his head, no, and finding no words to speak, he leaves the tent.
The scene shifts to Washington, D.C. O'Neill and Carter are strolling down marble steps as Jack comments, "You know, I can navigate my way across the galaxy, but I get lost every time I go to Washington!" Sam knows her way around D.C., as she explains to Jack how she spent 2 years at the Pentagon trying to make the Stargate program a reality.
O'Neill: "You know, I can navigate my way across a galaxy, but I get lost every time I come to Washington."
Carter: "Don't worry, Sir. These are my old stomping grounds."
O'Neill: "Sorry to hear that."
Carter: "Two years at the Pentagon trying to make the Stargate program a reality. I'd say it was time well spend, considering."
O'Neill: "Ya think?"
They enter an official cocktail party. Gen. Hammond beckons Sam over, and as she crosses the room, she sees her father, and is quite surprised.
In the tent on Abydos, Teal'c remains with Sha're and Kasuf. Sha're tells her father that Daniel no longer loves her. Teal'c tells her that she is incorrect, he loves her greatly. Kasuf observes that he does not behave as a husband. Suddenly, Sha're realizes that she knows Teal'c. He assumes it is from when he was present as the Goa'uld took over her body. He begins to ask for her forgiveness. But there is much more Sha're knows and remembers! She knows he is called the traitor, Teal'c, and other images of Apophis cloud her mind. She shares the memories of the Goa'uld within her! Teal'c goes out to find Daniel, who is sits dejectedly on the ground. He is absently pouring sand through his hands, and holding his head. Teal'c doesn't want to tell Daniel something, but the urgency of it prompts him to speak, "Daniel Jackson, we must return with Sha're through the Stargate…immediately!" Daniel takes a moment to clear his thoughts and asks why. Teal'c feels it would be of great strategic importance to gain access to the Goa'uld genetic memory - even for only a few days. "What?!!" Daniel explodes. "Do you know who you're talking about here?" "I do," responds Teal'c carefully, "and soon she will give birth!" Daniel is filled with pain. He is certain Sha're has been through enough and he doesn't want her handed over for study. Teal'c tries to tell him just how important this could be, that the knowledge gained may save the Earth! "I DON'T CARE!" is Daniel's distraught response. He won't put Sha're through that too. "Sorry" Daniel blurts, turning his back to Teal'c, trying to end the discussion. Teal'c is losing his patience. He must get Daniel to realize the impact of the position he is taking, "You are more sorry for yourself than Sha're!" Teal'c lays it all on the line for Daniel. Within days, if Sha're gives birth, Apophis will return and take her and the child away forever. That is the fate Daniel is choosing for Sha're by not having her come to Earth. All the while, Daniel has not faced Teal'c, but he is beginning to realize Teal'c is right. He asks for some time alone with his wife, and pauses outside the tent to collect himself before he enters.
Sam hugs her father. He has come to see her receive the air medal for her work in analysis of deep space radar technology! Jack strolls over with punch and meets Jacob Carter. Pleasantries are exchanged. Sam's dad doesn't quite understand what could be so exciting about analysis of deep space radar technology!
Hammond: "Colonel Jack O'Neill...Jacob Carter."
O'Neill: "Carter. As in...?"
Carter: "As in my father, Sir, yes."
O'Neill: "Get outta town. Sam's dad? I've heard nothing about you, Sir."
Jake: "What's there to say about an old General waiting to retire?"
Carter: "Dad, I talk about you all the time."
O'Neill: "I retired myself one time. Couldn't stay away."
Jake: "From your analysis of deep space radar telemetry?"
O'Neill: "Well, it's just so damn fascinating."
Jake: "Oh, I'm sure it is. Otherwise you wouldn't be receiving the air medal."
O'Neill: "We have our moments. Um, will you excuse me? We just don't get out of Cheyenne Mountain enough. I'm going to go grab some fresh air. General, Captain, General...waiter!"
Jake Carter whispers to Sam, "Your cover stories could use a little polish!" He knows medals are given for something substantially more than studying radar, but he doesn't push the point with his daughter, instead he offers her something much more exciting - going to NASA! He is going to help her achieve her dream of going to space! Sam can only stare at him!
Daniel uncomfortably enters the tent. Sha're turns from him, eyes downcast, and whispers "You hate me." "No, I love you." Daniel responds, not sounding too convincing. "Will you forgive me?" Sha're asks. This simple question spurs Daniel to go to her side. He holds her in his arms tenderly, for the first time in over a year. His feelings, so deeply felt, so unspoken, now must be said. "There is nothing to forgive! I hate what's been done to you. I hate what Apophis plans for the child growing inside of you. Look at me! I love you…everything else…I love you." He tries to smile, to reassure her, as he almost breaks down himself. Sha're timidly asks him if he will stay with her. Daniel tells her he can't, because he wants her to come home with him! She smiles as he hugs her again, as if to never let her go!
Back in Washington, Sam discovers her father has been pulling strings to get her into the shuttle program. Sam tells her dad she is doing very important work and that he should have asked her first. He can't believe she has given up her dreams of becoming an astronaut. Meanwhile, Jack is alone at a bar having a beer. A young man, dressed in a suit, approaches him asking if he is O'Neill. Jack is suspicious and asks in return who he is. He identifies himself as a journalist and Jack rises up to leave. The reporter knows about the Stargate! Jack denies any knowledge of what he is saying. Undeterred, the reporter tells of sources that have told him about the Stargate device and what it can do. He also taped O'Neill and Carter as they mentioned the Stargate project, and Jack navigating his way across the galaxy. He is looking for corroboration from O'Neill. Jack hands him a story about his being a Colonel in the U.S. Airforce and the C-5 Galaxy is a transport aircraft. The reporter further inquires, "And the Stargate?" "You got me on that one!" responds O'Neill as he leaves the bar.
Around the fire, Daniel, Sha're, Kasuf, and Teal'c are discussing Sha're's coming to Earth. Daniel tells her they will ask her questions, but he won't let anyone hurt her. He tells her it will be necessary to hold her prisoner when the Goa'uld returns. Kasuf is more worried about Apophis' return. He fears destruction of the village if Sha're is gone. Teal'c suggests he simply tell Apophis an enemy came and took her away. Kasuf is greatly relieved that this would be telling the truth, and immediately commands Sha're to go with them. Daniel doesn't want to force her, and she decides she will go, to be with her Daniel. Teal'c is concerned about Apophis' imminent return, so they prepare to leave.
Jack returns to the cocktail party to tell Gen. Hammond that they have sprung a leak! When the General realizes the reporter knows a lot, he agrees, they have a big problem!
At the pyramid, on Abydos, Sha're, Daniel and Teal'c are hurrying to the Stargate. As they enter, the room begins to shake and vibrate. Teal'c knows it is the approach of a Goa'uld ship. Sha're backs away from Daniel. Her eyes glow as she states, "My Lord comes for me!" Teal'c arms his zat gun. Daniel intervenes, calling to Sha're to fight, to hold on a little longer. She does return, but the birth pains begin! Teal'c starts to dial the DHD, but sees the transport rings descending from the ship. They flee the pyramid. It is Heru-ur and an armed contingent who appear! He orders the Jaffa to find Apophis' queen.
Gen. Hammond, Sam and Jack ponder the repercussions of full disclosure of the Stargate program. They foresee domestic upheaval and international trouble. It is suspected that the source might be Senator Kinsey, or one of his company. Gen. Hammond wants Jack to find out just how much the reporter knows.
In a hidden room, Daniel sits behind Sha're holding her, helping with contractions. Teal'c enters to tell them the ship belongs to Heru-ur, a great enemy of Apophis. Sha're fears he will take the baby. Daniel keeps coaching her to breathe through contractions. He tries to tell her not to worry. After all, they hid from Ra there, they are safe there. Teal'c, ever the soldier, tells him he is wrong, and that Heru-ur will find Sha're. He wants Daniel to leave with him. Daniel flatly refuses to leave her, and when Teal'c realizes he can't change Daniel's mind, he pledges to try his best to keep the horus guards away from them.
As O'Neill sits on a bench outside USAF headquarters, the reporter, Armand, once again approaches him. Armand is reluctant to tell what he knows, but does tell O'Neill the story will make him a hero! He knows about SG-1, the 9 to 12 other units, Cheyenne Mountain, the Stargate, and the cost of the program. O'Neill tries hard to convince Armand he doesn't know anything - and not to proceed. The reporter continues, telling how he knows about the alien ships and how SG-1 blew them up as they were poised to attack Earth! Finally, Jack gives in.
Jack: "If you are going with the story, get one thing right. It's O'Neill, with two Ls! There's another Col. O'Neil, with one L, and he has no sense of humor at all!"
Jack warns that the story will read like science fiction and won't be believed. Armand is willing to wait and see, and turns down the steps to leave. As he is about to cross the street, a screeching car is heard. It crashes directly into the reporter, and speeds away. Jack yells for a 911 call, and rushes to the man's side. He hold's Armand's head. "You did this!" Armand accuses. "No!" says Jack. "Son-of-a-bi…" Armand gasps, and dies. Blood is on O'Neill's hands!
Heru-ur is certain Apophis' queen and child are on Abydos. He wants them taken alive. The horus guard brutally question Kasuf, who tells them nothing. Teal'c appears just in time to rescue Kasuf, but a weapon is fired. We do not see who is the victor.
In a final scene with her dad, Sam learns that he is dying from cancer. He tells her he hopes to be around long enough to see her go into space, as nothing she does now could possibly compare. In silent agony, Sam must keep the secret of her Stargate travels. Her father adds that his last wish is to see her fulfill her dreams of becoming an astronaut. She tells him she can't. He abruptly leaves, tersely congratulating her for the medal she is to receive.
Sha're is screaming in pain. It is time to push, and she is holding back, knowing the demon will return. Daniel tells her to push. "NO!" she screams. He tells her to look at him. He again professes his love for her now and always, "The Goa'uld will never take that away from us, NEVER!" "DANIEL!" she screams. "I'm here," he responds, "now the baby is here and you have to push!" "Forgive me!" Sha're pants in pain, as the baby is born and she is transformed. A tremendous mixture of emotions floods through Daniel. Relief for the safe birth of the baby, sorrow over losing Sha're, joy over a new life, regret that the baby is a boy (a definite host possibility for Apophis), and what to do next? Sha're's eyes glow, her voice deepens and resonates as she coldly demands Daniel give her the child. He backs away, exhausted, shocked, protecting the baby. A horus guard enters and demands the baby be given to him. He raises his zat gun at Daniel. Daniel's eyes are filled with tears, the baby cries, yet still it appears as if Daniel knows the voice of this guard!
"Apophis, my pharaoh, will destroy you both for this!" Sha're hisses. The guard tells Sha're that Heru-ur has taken Apophis' son as his own, then he shoots her with the zat gun. Daniel can only watch helplessly as she writhes in pain and passes out. As the guard's helmet folds down, Teal'c's face is revealed. They have no time to remain, and leave with the baby. Daniel presents Kasuf with his grandson. Kasuf will find a nursing mother and hide the baby away. Daniel again promises he will not give up trying to get Sha're back.
At Cheyenne Mountain, Gen. Hammond is awarding the air medals to Jack and Sam. The President was not able to change his schedule, after the accident changed Jack's availability, and couldn't award the medals personally. After being awarded the medals for bravery in destroying the Goa'uld ships, Sam prepares to leave for Abydos. Jack remains a bit longer. "It was an accident," the General firmly states. "Yes, sir!" O'Neill responds, but his face is filled with doubt.
Daniel is being marched into the pyramid by a horus guard. Teal'c's voice is heard from inside the helmet. He announces to Heru-ur that serpent guards of Apophis have taken the child. "Who is this human?" Heru-ur asks. Teal'c responds, "He claims his people are the Tau-ri!" "You! Among the warriors who defeated Apophis?" Heru-ur haughtily asks. "As a matter of fact, I was," Daniel responds. Heru-ur seems intrigued. "The Tau-ri are stronger than you think," continues Jackson, as he proposes an alliance against their common enemy, Apophis.
Heru-ur: "Alliance?! You are nothing! Your world is nothing! Once I have conquered Apophis, I will make slaves of your people! You will serve me!"
Daniel: "No, I don't think so."
This enrages Heru-ur, "Kneel before your god!" Teal'c hits Daniel in the back of the knee with his staff weapon, to force him to kneel. Heru-ur slowly opens his hand to reveal the ribbon device. As he starts to press it on Daniel's forehead, the Stargate begins to cycle. Heru-ur expects Apophis, while Daniel and Teal'c are gambling on Jack and Sam. Daniel must remain kneeling as Heru-ur's attention is briefly taken by the incoming travelers. Teal'c and the other guards rush to the Gate, two on each side. Heru-ur remains by Daniel, as they all watch. As the Gate energy pours out, Teal'c pushes one guard into the stream, vaporizing him. He turns to fight the other guards and succeeds in hitting them with zat gun blasts, but is struck by a staff weapon blast himself, and he falls. Heru-ur arms his energy field protection and waits. Sam and Jack enter, much confused. Heru-ur shouts, "Tau-ri! Kree!" and aims his ribbon device at Jack. Jack and Sam dive for cover, as Daniel jumps up to grab Heru-ur's arm. Heru-ur spins around and catches Daniel across the face with his armed hand. Daniel goes down hard. Sam shoots the guards who have recovered from Teal'c's zat gun blasts. Jack fires his gun at Heru-ur. The bullets bounce off the energy field. "You dare challenge me!" Heru-ur shouts, as he aims the ribbon device again at Jack. "Yeah, I was thinkin about it!" Jack responds as he draws his knife and throws it at Heru-ur. It penetrates the field and passes through the ribbon device, into Heru-ur's hand. The device short-circuits, as Heru-ur pushes buttons for the transport rings. "You will pay for this insolence!" he threatens, as the rings transport him up.
Carter: "Good think you remembered the shield's deflection capability is directly proportional to the amount of kinetic energy directed at it."
O'Neill: "Right."
Sam discovers Teal'c as Daniel is slowly recovering and standing up. The Stargate cycles again! Daniel wearily says "Apophis!" to which Jack responds "What?" They all hide, as Apophis and his guards step through. He orders the Jaffa to find Ammonet. She then appears, dressed elegantly as Apophis' queen. As Apophis asks for the child, Ammonet tells him it was stolen by Heru-ur, and she asks for forgiveness for failing him. He tenderly touches her cheek as Daniel can only watch from the shadows. As they prepare to leave, Sha're/Ammonet sees Daniel in hiding, but says nothing. She joins Apophis and they return home.
O'Neill: "Someone explain to me what just happened."
Teal'c: "It is a lengthy tale, O'Neill."
O'Neill: "Long story, Teal'c."
Aware the Goa'uld ship is still above them, Sam begins to dial home. Jack asks Daniel if he is all right and he responds "No! No I'm not! But I will be!" Teal'c offers some hope to Daniel as he says, "She looked directly at us, Daniel Jackson, and did not reveal our position!" Daniel nods a mute yes. "Let's go home," Jack leads. A very drained, but always hopeful, Daniel remains a moment longer, gazing at the shimmering Gatelight that has only just swallowed Sha're.
