Carter fiddles with the control room computer as the rest of SG-1 waits impatiently next to the Gate ramp. Daniel tells Jack she needed to have very precise calculations this time of year. After asking how the wound on her hand was, General Hammond mysteriously hands Sam a folded note, instructing her to keep it in her vest pocket until she gets on the other side.
The team proceeds through the Gate, only to exit on the same Gate ramp in a deserted SGC! Then the Gate begins to shimmer and warp then disappears entirely and is replaced by a gigantic Titan missile! The team is standing directly underneath as a speaker announces, "Test burn in T minus 20 seconds!" As the rest of the team scrambles to find an exit from the room and the countdown continues, Teal'c stands directly underneath and fires his zat gun apparently neutralizing the missile before it can fire.
Soldiers storm the room and command the team to put hands on their heads and kneel. A soldier asks who they are and how they got into the facility. Carter cautions O'Neill not to tell them anything, and states that they are still in Cheyenne Mountain!
Soldiers stow away all of SG-1's gear and weaponry for transport. As one of them packs the stuff in a box, he finds the note in Sam's vest… it reads, "GEORGE… HELP THEM… AUGUST 10th 9:15am … AUGUST 11th 6:30pm.
As they wait in a holding cell, Sam says she's certain they've traveled back in time roughly 30 years. Daniel wonders if they could time travel at will… perhaps visit Babylon. Teal'c adds that they could change regrettable things in Earth's history. Sam adamantly disagrees. She worries about changing history and affecting their future in ways they couldn't predict. She cautions them all about telling anyone who they are or where they're from.
Soldiers enter and address Daniel in Russian, asking if they are Soviet spies. He reflexively responds, "Nyet!" and cringes as they lead Jack away for questioning, realizing his mistake. Jack taunts him with "Nyet?" as he goes.
In an interrogation cell, Major Robert Thornton asks Jack who he is and the Colonel replies, "Captain James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise!" Thornton is impressed by Jack's American accent, still believing him to be a Soviet spy. He wants to know what the weapon was that the cameras recorded. Jack hesitates and tells him it's difficult to say… as in hard to pronounce. Finally in an attempt to remain elusive, Jack tells the Major, "I'll be honest with you, Bob, my name is not Kirk, it is Skywalker - Luke Skywalker."
Back at the SGC, Hammond is told there is no sign of SG-1 and that they definitely never made it to P2X555. Hammond does not authorize a search.
As SG-1 is taken away in an Air Force van, it has a flat tire and pulls over. The soldier who discovered the note goes into the back of the van, tells the team he arranged the flat, and he needs to know who they are and who gave them the note. Reading his nametag, which says HAMMOND, Sam realizes he's young General Hammond, and she tells him that HE gave her the note that he found. Lieutenant Hammond knows that the note is in his own handwriting. Sam explains that it was all his idea, and that they've traveled back in time 30 years. Not willing to believe all of this, Hammond turns to leave.
Jack asks him the date and he tells them its August 4th, 1969. Jack tells Hammond that he knows the Lt. watched the moon landing from his father's hospital room two days after his first heart attack, and adds, "Are you gonna listen to yourself or not?"
Hammond unlocks their cuffs, hands Jack a zat gun and Jack quickly stuns the other guards. They intercept the truck that's following them, and disintegrate their gear, except for a GDO. Jack then asks Hammond for some cash and promises to pay him back, with interest. Finally, Jack zats him, to keep him from getting court martialed. The team heads through the woods, looking for the Interstate highway. They decide they should look for the Stargate and try to figure out what is supposed to happen at the two times indicated on the note.
Daniel suggests going to New York, as that's where Catherine lives and she's probably the only person outside the military who might tell them where the Stargate is. He suggests they go in disguise. As they are having trouble flagging down a ride, Teal'c grows impatient and stands in front of a brightly painted school bus with a large peace sign on the hood. A young man and woman in hippie garb are headed for a big concert in upstate New York and agree to give them a ride.
Teal'c rides up front with the driver who introduces himself as Michael. "I am not at liberty to reveal my identity," Teal'c responds. "Far out!" Michael exclaims. They find a cheap clothing place and don 60's garb, and travel across the US on Rt. 66. Teal'c even takes a turn driving, with a rather nervous looking Daniel seated next to him.
When they make camp one night, Sam figures out they must have been sent back in time due to a solar flare. She also knows what the dates and times must mean on the note. They are solar flares they can use to get themselves home. Michael and his girlfriend overhear this discussion and ask who they really are, and how they can travel between the Earth and other places. Jack tells them they are from another planet, and Daniel adds… in a galaxy far, far away. Jack further convinces them by firing the zat gun, and after a bit of discussion, the couple agrees to help them get home.
They stop briefly at a solar observatory, where Jack verifies that the first date and time is in fact a flare. Now they know they must make the second one to get back to the future, on exactly 6:03pm the next day. Daniel and Sam visit Catherine Langford. Daniel poses as a German scientist who's father worked with Catherine's father, and based on what he learned they are now looking for the "doorway to heaven." She tells them it is locked away in an armory in Washington, D.C. and that the military won't even acknowledge its existence.
They travel to D.C., and the time is growing very close. Michael wants to go back with them, but they refuse to take him even though Michael got drafted and doesn't want to kill anyone.
SG-1 enters the Air Force installation and manages to find the Stargate and uncrate it. They hook it up to a series of idling trucks to get it powered up, and they manually dial. Guards come in response to the noise, and a brief firefight ensues. Jack subdues them with the zat gun, but they are forced to leave a few seconds early and emerge in a future time to find a deserted Gate room. A woman in a flowing white dress greets them. It is a middle aged Cassandra! Sam had told her what would happen and she's been expecting them her whole life! She sends them back; powering the Gate with a wrist held gem device. She reveals nothing; other than to tell them their journey is just beginning.
At last, incoming travelers are announced at the SGC. Hammond anxiously awaits them. Jack exits the Gate with a resounding "YES!" and salutes the General with a "We're home! Thanks to one sparky Lieutenant Hammond!"
The General recounts what he remembers from when he was young and found the note. The cut on Sam's hand gave him a clue that this was to be the mission. "It's going to be a long debriefing people. We'll start in one hour," the General orders, then adds, "Oh, by the way, with interest… you owe me $539.50!"
"Yes Sir!" Jack answers with a smile.
