Fair Game

Arthur Simms, Secretary of Defense, is present at the SGC to honor those who have served, speaking to an assembled group with SG-1 standing at attention next to him. His speech salutes everyone's "ongoing heroic spirit." General Hammond next announces Captain Carter's immediate promotion to the rank of Major, in recognition of her outstanding work. Jack salutes her saying, "Well done! Major!" He begins a brief speech in her honor, "Normally, I am a man of very few words…" when a bright flash of light surrounds him, and he's gone!

Hammond calls a Code 9, and the base goes on alert. Jack is still completing his speech, when he finds himself aboard an alien spaceship orbiting Earth. A being appears before him with greetings and states he is Thor. He tells Jack that the System Lords now view Earth as a formidable threat, since they destroyed Hathor. Thor offers his assistance in dealing with a possible Goa'uld invasion 100 times stronger than that of Apophis. He offers to negotiate with the Goa'uld to have Earth included in the Asgaard protected planets treaty. It would prevent the attack. Jack agrees, reluctantly to try negotiating, and is returned to the SGC.

Hammond asks what happens if the negotiations fail. Jack bluntly tells him, "Total annihilation!" Thor joins the SGC meeting, and tells them the System Lords have agreed to negotiate, and as is customary in such things, they will come to Earth to do it. Also, the Asgaard have chosen O'Neill as Earth's representative. Jack tries to defer to Daniel, but Thor won't hear it.

In a later briefing, Daniel and Teal'c explain the history and present status of the three Goa'uld who are to come, Kronos, Yu and Nirrti. Hammond orders Teal'c to be liaison to the Goa'uld, however he refuses to see to their "petty needs." Daniel chimes in, "I'll see to the… petty needs of the Goa'uld, Sir." Hammond agrees.

All weapons are stored away per advice of the Asgaard. Preparations are made. Teal'c is reluctant to surrender his staff weapon, but eventually obeys a direct order from Hammond.

The Goa'uld come through the Stargate. Kronos is arrogant and disapproving of his accommodations. He knows Teal'c and the two exchange heated words in the Goa'uld language. The three Goa'uld protest the security cameras in their personal quarters. Daniel agrees to have them removed, but the ones in the hallways must remain. Kronos tells Teal'c he must not show his face again, and calls him "Sho'va!"

Once they are alone, Teal'c reveals to Daniel that his father was once first prime of Kronos and that Kronos commanded his father to engage in an impossible battle. When he lost, Kronos killed his father as punishment. He and his mother fled to Chulak, where he vowed to become first prime of Apophis, sworn enemy of Kronos.

Sam tells Jack she hates having the Goa'uld there, and that Kronos is the one who sent the Ashrak to kill Jolinar. Jack tells her he hates having them ANYWHERE!

The negotiating group assembles in the conference room and Thor joins them. The three Goa'uld speak angrily to each other in their own language. Jack protests this to Thor, and the three leave the room in a huff. Jack is completely confused as to what he did wrong. Thor tells him that he insulted them by speaking out of turn, but it was expected.

Daniel enters and asks what happened. Jack sums it up, "We said hello, insulted each other, and broke for recess." Thor is sorry the Goa'uld have been allowed to become as powerful as they are, but the Asgaard have concerns in their own galaxy, an enemy far worse than the Goa'uld. Thor then returns to his ship with a warning that Earth will be asked to make great sacrifices in these negotiations.

Daniel writes a letter of apology, in Goa'uld, and Jack signs it. Jack admires how Daniel can "really grovel when he has to." The letter works, and the group meets once again. The Asgaard propose to give the System Lords access to a stellar passageway, and that Earth will agree to limit it's development so that it will not be a threat to the Goa'uld. Jack is incredulous. The System Lords accept, with one proviso… the immediate forfeiture of the Tau'ri Stargates… both of them.

In a follow-up meeting, no one can come up with a reason not to accept the proposal. The alternative is, after all, annihilation. Jack asks Thor aboard his ship what he thinks Earth should do. Thor doesn't give him much help.

The President accepts the terms, and everyone prepares to reconvene. As Daniel goes to summon the Goa'uld representatives, alarms sound a security alert and a medical team is summoned. Daniel rushes to Kronos' room to find both Teal'c and Kronos badly injured and unconscious on the floor.

Dr. Frasier determines that Teal'c is healing, with the help of his larval Goa'uld, but he has sustained a blow to the head. Kronos has severe internal injuries and his host is dying. Janet doesn't think he'll survive. The security videotape shows only Teal'c entering Kronos' room. Daniel then reveals that Kronos killed Teal'c's father.

Nirrti and Yu are brought to Kronos. Daniel gives them the healing device. Nirrti tries it, but claims it's not enough, he needs a sarcophagus. They demand to be able to leave. Thor tells Jack, despite how bad things look for Earth at that moment, he must leave, as "it is not a perfect galaxy." He cannot interfere without starting a much larger war that can't be won at this time.

Hammond tells the Goa'uld they will not be allowed to leave, and they are extremely upset, vowing destruction of Earth. Teal'c regains consciousness. He says Kronos requested him to come alone to his room, but when he got there, denied ever making the request. Before he could leave, they were attacked, by an invisible force.

Daniel recalls that Hathor had the ability to appear and disappear, a stealth technology. Sam decides to try the healing device, and after much effort, she makes it work. It restores Kronos, and he speaks, "You have healed me, human!" Jack offers to prove which Goa'uld did this to him, and Kronos asks what he wants in return.

They know that Nirrti lied about being able to heal Kronos, and not much more. They decide to bluff. Jack tells Nirrti he knows she is the only Goa'uld there who has the technology to become invisible. Daniel says the Tok'ra were consulted and told them she'd been experimenting with phase shifting to battle the Reetou.

Yu is incensed, and he yells at Nirrti, "You do not share this technology with the System Lords?"

"They are lying!" she screams back. As Yu and Nirrti begin to fight, she becomes invisible and flees. Sam picks her up with a TER gun, and she surrenders. Jack tells Yu that Kronos agreed to support the treaty and not force Earth to give up the Stargate. Yu agrees to the terms. The three Goa'uld leave, holding Nirrti as a prisoner.

Kronos issues this warning as he goes, "We will not attack your world, but - if you continue to use your Stargate, be warned! If one of you is caught by one of the System Lords, he will be shown no mercy and will suffer greatly!"

"That certainly makes life… more interesting!" Jack calmly responds.

After the Gate closes behind the three, Daniel celebrates in a last laugh fashion, "Boy, is she gonna get it!"

"My heart bleeds," Jack quips.
