Forever In A Day

SG units are fighting while Colonel O'Neill uses explosives to free captives within a locked pen. Kasuf is among them. He runs to Daniel and tells him, "She took the boy, the son of my daughter!" as he motions to a tent in the distance. Daniel heads for the tent, and sees Sha're there. He exchanges fire with her serpent guards, and follows Sha're inside the tent. The SG units come under heavy fire from attacking Jaffa forces and are pinned down. As Daniel enters the tent alone, he raises his gun to Ammonet telling her not to move and asking where the boy is. Her eyes flash as she responds, "Where you and the System Lords will never find him." She slowly raises her ribbon device as Daniel tells her "Don't!" He finds himself unable to fire on her, as she actives the weapon causing him to fall to his knees. "No! Sha're fight it," Daniel strains to say. Ammonet coolly responds, "The host can not help you." Teal'c enters the tent and arms his staff weapon, nervously watching as Ammonet continues to subject Daniel to the damaging ray. He begins to slump and loses his hold on the handgun.

Daniel wakes in an infirmary bed at the SGC, surrounded by his team mates, General Hammond and Doctor Frasier. At first Daniel can't recall what happened, then he remembers seeing Sha're. Jack tells him that Sha're is dead, but Daniel refuses to believe it. Teal'c steps forward and accepts responsibility, saying he was forced to fire upon Sha're and terminate her life, but only to save Daniel's life. Daniel still is in disbelief, he is certain her guards put her in a sarcophagus and that she's still alive. In order to make him believe, Daniel is placed in a wheelchair and taken to a makeshift morgue, where Sha're's body is unveiled for him. He asks why they didn't just leave her there, so her followers could have saved her. Teal'c tells him none of her followers were left alive.

Daniel touches her face and then glares at Teal'c, "You should have waited longer! I would have gotten through to her." Teal'c refutes this, telling him it would have been a matter of seconds before he'd have died. Jack maintains that Teal'c did the right thing.

Later, Daniel rests in bed, reflecting on a pen he is holding in his hand. Sam comes to talk and bring him chocolate walnut cookies. He remembers how Sha're thought a pen was magic, and how she wondered about the simplest of things. He begins to cry as he admits that he couldn't save her, even with all the wonders at his disposal. Then he abruptly shuts down, telling Sam he needs to sleep, so she goes.

As he starts to drop off, he experiences the ribbon device again, and sees its glow, Sha're's face and hears her calling to him. Then he awakens to see Sha're sitting by his bed, dressed in SGC fatigues. He is very confused to see her alive. Sam explains that although Teal'c had fired on Sha're, they took her to the Tok'ra who had a sarcophagus and a way to remove the Goa'uld. Sha're lovingly touches his face, then says she only came to tell him about the boy. A pained expression crosses her face, and she disappears.

Daniel wakes "again" and asks Doctor Frasier if Sha're was there. The doctor says they haven't taken her body back to Abydos yet for the funeral. He realizes he must have been dreaming. When Daniel recovers, he goes to General Hammond and resigns from the SGC. Hammond tries to talk him into simply taking some personal time off to think about it first, but he refuses. He bluntly states, "I joined the program so I could find my wife, I found her, end of story."

He packs up his office as Jack comes by to chat. Daniel has arranged a replacement for himself, Robert Rothman, his research assistant when he was doing his dissertation. Jack doesn't believe Daniel will really stay away, "Give it a week… you'll miss me!" Daniel smirks and retorts, "All the bad tempered insults… all the illogical arguments… the…" Jack cuts him off, "OK.. you'll miss Carter and Teal'c." Daniel reacts to Teal'c's name, "I'll miss Carter." Daniel fights back tears as he tells Jack how he can't bear the thought of going through the Gate to other worlds that would now be devoid of hope. He is certain the SGC will go on without him. Teal'c blocks Daniel's way in the hall, asking if there were some human ritual in which he could ask for Daniel's forgiveness. Daniel simply says no, and leaves.

Jack and Sam help Daniel move into his apartment. He plans to get on with his life and go on some remote dig somewhere far away. He tells Sam they'll see him again, at the funeral, and hugs her goodbye. Daniel begins to shake hands with Jack, but is pulled into a strong hug. Jack tells him, "It's been a pleasure doing business with you, Doctor Jackson."

Later, in bed, Daniel wakes to find Sha're next to him and once again he experiences the ribbon device and hears her voice. She tells him to go back to sleep and tomorrow return to his travels through the Chappa'ai. He tells her there's no need anymore, now that he's found her. Sha're explains that he must continue, so that he can find the boy, and also he must forgive Teal'c, as he did what was right. She kisses him back to sleep and he wakes to an empty bed.

Sha're's funeral is next. Sam, Jack, Hammond and Janet Frasier are in attendance. Daniel speaks for Sha're and weighs her heart against the weight of a feather. Her soul is found to be light and she is found worthy to be with the God, by the trial of the Great Scale. Dirt is placed over her body. Kasuf tells Daniel he still has not heard Sha're. He should go to her, and Kasuf motions to a tent.

Sha're appears behind Daniel, again telling him to forgive Teal'c and together they must find the boy. Kasuf adds that he is 'harseesus', one who holds the secrets. The boy is the son of two Goa'uld hosts and he contains all the secrets of the Goa'uld. Sha're vanishes again and Daniel experiences Ammonet's grip within the ribbon device, only to wake up alone in his bed once again.

He goes to the SGC to talk with Sam and greet the team as it returns from a mission. The team now includes Robert. Jack seems displeased with Daniel's replacement. Daniel tells Rothman, "Don't let Jack get to you, he's just intimidated by you because you're way smarter than he is." Teal'c acknowledges Daniel and Daniel tells him that he did the right thing. Then Daniel asks Sam about the hand device, about how it works via thought control. He asks if it is possible to send a thought through the ribbon device, as he thinks Sha're was trying to send him a message. He doesn't reveal to Sam what the message is however.

As Daniel returns to his apartment, he is stunned to find Jack and Kasuf already inside. He keeps asking Jack how he got in, and Jack tells him he got tired of waiting and broke the lock. Kasuf is upset that Daniel is leaving O'Neill's tribe and that he will no longer travel through the Chappa'ai. He says that the people of Abydos feel much more secure knowing he is out there protecting them. Kasuf insists that Sha're wants him to continue to travel among the gods, so that he can find the boy. When Daniel looks incredulous, Kasuf tells him to ask Sha're himself, and motions toward Daniel's bedroom door.

Instead of his bedroom, Daniel finds the planet where he last saw Sha're, with dead Jaffa lying about. He enters the tent, when he sees Sha're beckon to him. The light of the ribbon device plays across his face again, and he hears Sha're call for him to come to her.

He wakes up yet again in his bed and hurries to the SGC where he finds Teal'c meditating. Daniel questions Teal'c about Sha're's son. Teal'c explains that it is forbidden for two Goa'uld hosts to have a child. The punishment is death. The child would contain all the knowledge of the Goa'uld. Such children are called harseesus and are hunted down and destroyed by the Goa'uld.

Daniel goes to General Hammond's office where he finds Jack and Hammond in a heated debate. Jack is complaining, "General, I tell ya the guy's got two left feet! He slows down the unit!" Daniel pokes in his head and states, "Déjà vu." Then he proceeds to tell Jack that Rothman was a two-time decathlon champion. Jack admits to wanting Robert off the team. Daniel says he's given it some thought and he'd like to come back. That there's something through the Stargate that he still had to be the one to find.

SG-1 gets ready for a mission, now including Daniel. They emerge from the Gate and begin to explore a new world. Jack lets Daniel know it's good to have him back. Suddenly, Daniel bolts for the Gate, enters an address and disappears before the rest of the team can figure where he's gone.

He has returned to the tent where Sha're died. He finds a scorch mark on the floor, then Sha're appears. She tells him he is the only one who can save the boy. Ammonet has sent the boy into hiding with her closest aide. In a place called Kheb.

Daniel remembers learning about Kheb, that it is the mythical place where Osiris hid from Set. He tells Sha're Kheb is only a myth. She denies this and makes him promise that he will save the child. She kisses him, and for the last time he is back in the grip of Ammonet's ribbon device. Pain is etched on is face. His handgun completes its fall to the ground, and Teal'c shoots Ammonet with his staff weapon. Daniel falls to the floor and crawls to Sha're's side. She tells him, "I love you Daniel," as her eyes close in death. Daniel lies there stunned, realizing all he had experienced had happened while he was subjected to the ribbon device.

As gunfire sounds outside the tent, Teal'c apologizes. "You did the right thing," Daniel chokes out, never taking his eyes off of Sha're. Carter and O'Neill enter the tent and witness Daniel gently touching Sha're's face. Teal'c tells them, "Daniel Jackson will be fine." Touching her lips Daniel says, "I love you too."
