Urgo

Hammond and SG-1 are looking at an image of a tropical planet on a computer screen, while Sam explains that the probe has been sent to the planet in question and it indicates a sustainable atmosphere – temperature seventy-eight degrees Fahrenheit, and no obvious signs of civilization. She says that the planet “Looks like an untouched paradise”, to which Teal’c replies, “Appearances may be deceiving”. Jack joins in with, “One man’s ceiling is another man’s floor,” and Daniel replies, “A fool’s paradise is a wise man’s hell.” Jack is out of his depth now, and retorts, “Never run with scissors?”

At this point, General Hammond interrupts, asking if they were trying to make a point. Sam says that they should perform a standard recon mission, mineral and biological. Hammond agrees with her, but Jack is not exactly excited by this prospect, and says a sarcastic comment, “My favorite.” Hammond turns to Jack, about to make a comment to him, when he jumps in with, “I know, General. It’s all fun and games until someone breaks a nail.” Having imparted his outlook on the mission, he turns and walks off, leaving Hammond smirking at his remark.

Scene: Embarkation room.

We see the Stargate activate, and SG-1 enter the gate room, ready to leave on their mission. Jack is still clearly bored by the idea of this mission, and saunters in, saying, “Au revior, mon General.” Teal’c is confused my Jack’s use of an unfamiliar term, so he starts to explain what it means, by repeating it in other languages, including Italian, German and Spanish, then, as they step through the wormhole, “Which all, very loosely translated means...”

They step through the wormhole, and find themselves immediately back in the gate room, just as Jack finished his sentence with, “Goodbye?” Hammond asks Jack what happened, but Jack just repeats what he just said. From SG-1’s point of view, they stepped through the wormhole, and it brought them back to the gate room, where, in actual fact, they had been gone for over fifteen hours - perplexed looks all around.

Opening credits ensue.

******

In the infirmary, Doctor Fraiser has checked all of them out and they all appear to be fine. Daniel wonders what happened to the lost time, and Sam asks if they could have been drugged, but Fraiser says that there are no marks to indicate that. When they didn’t come back on schedule, a second MALP was sent through and that came back, with the first MALP, just before SG-1 did.

******

In the briefing room, Sam plays footage that the second MALP recorded when it was on the planet, which shows the same picture as they originally saw from the first MALP. She says that because this is the second MALP’s footage, they should be able to see the first MALP in the image, which they can’t. Showing some insight, Jack says, “Isn’t that thing supposed to probe a little?” Sam has an answer for that too: there were no tracks that the first MALP would have left if it had gone ‘probing’. She then shows them the footage played back frame-by-frame, showing an alien lab, with technology superior to Earth’s. They surmise that the image of the tropical planet is faked. As she is explaining this, Jack has been getting coffee. All of a sudden, they all seem to think that the coffee tastes “great,” to use Daniel’s description. Teal’c then takes the coffee pot, and drinks the entire contents in one gulp. After seeing their odd reactions to the coffee, Hammond orders them to stay on the base, so that they can have an eye kept on them. Daniel and Teal’c protest, saying that they feel fine.

******

Jack is in the commissary, looking over some paperwork while eating some pie. After his first mouthful, the taste distracts him, and instead of eating with the fork he has, he picks it up with his hand, and lays down his paperwork.

******

Sam is in the MALP room, clearly running a test of some sort, when she looks up, distracted. She puts down what she is holding and walks off, followed by her guard.

******

Daniel is busily writing in his office when he too suddenly stops work and leaves.

******

Back to Jack in the commissary, who is now surrounded by an impressive array of desserts. Sam, Daniel and Teal’c (followed by their guards) all arrived through the doors at the same time. They all sit down at the table and grab food, commenting on how great the food tastes, and wondering why it tastes so good. The loudspeaker comes on, calling SG-1 to one of the medical labs.

******

In the lab, Fraiser shows them a scan of their brains, saying that although the scans have a certain error percentage, she has uncovered an anomaly in the same place in all their brains. She gets a close-up scan back, and displays it, showing a small, round, metallic-looking device – it’s in all of them. Hammond asks if the devices can be removed, but Fraiser says it would cause irreparable brain damage. They discuss the devices, and SG-1’s odd behavior since they returned from the planet, trying to make a threat assessment. As they don’t know what it is, Hammond decides to quarantine them

******

SG-1 are all sitting in the quarantine room, Sam working on a laptop, Daniel and Teal’c playing a game and Jack sitting on a chair doing nothing. A voice is heard, saying, “Boring.” Jack asks who said that. Daniel replies, “It wasn’t me.” The voice is heard again, “What do you say we all go do something?” Jack asks who’s there, and in pops Urgo, out of thin air. They all get up, surprised at this person. They stare at him as he talks, then Jack calls in the airman who is guarding the door, and asks him if he sees an intruder in the room. After looking around carefully, he says no, and Jack dismisses him. They realize that Urgo can read the thoughts that they are having, and Sam realizes that Urgo is actually in their heads. She starts to theorize that it is some sort of controlled hallucination, but this just confuses Jack, a fact that Urgo points out happily. Urgo soon gets bored listening to Sam’s explanations and starts to ask if they can go somewhere else but when no one answers, he says “Kree!” to Teal’c.

******

Back in the infirmary, Janet asks SG-1 what he looks like. They are all at a loss to be able to describe him until Jack says, “A famous Tenor.” Urgo then points to a device behind Janet and asks what it is. Sam replies and tells him it’s a defibrillator, and Urgo asks if it’s defibrillating now. Janet just looks on, confused. Sam explains to Janet that he, or ‘it’ seems to crave new experiences. Sam explains the defibrillator to Urgo, who asks if it if hurts. SG-1 sit there a bit bewildered, and Daniel replies that he would think that a defibrillator hurts. Urgo then wants to use it, and manages to get Teal’c to get up and walk over to the machine, just as Janet was asking if they experience any physical sensations. Urgo then tried to convince SG-1 that they like having him there, and says that, in years to come, they’ll wonder how they ever got along without that constant companion. This strikes as a bit of a wake-up call – none of them want to be stuck with Urgo for the rest of their lives, but Sam thinks ahead and says to Urgo that his creator is going to want the knowledge he’s collected at some point. Urgo says that she doesn’t want to know, and then claims that they get the information out by opening their brains with a “...big giant can opener, and then they scoop me out with a big scoopy thing.” He then tells them it’s “Me or death, you have to decide.” They think about it.

******

In the briefing room, SG-1, Janet and Hammond are sitting around the table. Urgo is singing, “... me me-me-me,” and Jack snaps, telling him to stop it. We then see a shot of Jack gesturing at nothing, and the SF in the corner gestures to himself, asking if Jack wants him to stop doing something. Jack just waves dismissively. They discuss Urgo, and Sam says that she may be able to figure out a way to turn him off. Jack reaches over to her and says, “Please.” Urgo tells them he wants to play hide and seek, and starts counting loudly, his face hidden behind his hands. Hammond dismissed them, and Urgo looks up to find the room empty.

******

Sam is walking down one of the hallways with an invisible Urgo, telling him that she doesn’t have time to play, even if she’s ‘it’, so she tells him to “...go eat pie with Colonel O’Neill.” She walks up to Hammond and Janet, and Hammond says, “Major?” She tells him she was talking to Urgo, and Hammond says, “I see.” Sam says she wishes he did. Janet tries to tell Urgo to leave Sam alone, but talks to the wrong place. Sam excuses herself, and continues up the corridor a little way. Hammond asks Janet if she’s sure SG-1 is sane, and in the background you can see Sam gesturing wildly to a still-invisible Urgo.

******

In Sam’s lab we see Urgo disrupting her from trying to find a way to turn him off. Jack, Daniel and Teal’c walk in, and Sam tells them that she thinks she can turn Urgo ‘off’ with an EM (Electro Magnetic) pulse. Urgo then makes a loud noise that makes Sam spill her hot coffee over her hand. In an effort to convince Sam not to turn him off, Urgo makes himself smaller, then into an Air Force Officer. The pulse goes off, and Urgo disappears.

******

Back in the infirmary, Janet says that although the devices are still in SG-1’s brains, there is no longer an EM field. Jack wants SG-1 to go back to work, but Hammond tells him to give it a week.

******

Janet is in her office, clearly having just done a check up on Sam. She says that if Sam’s cleared by next weekend, she should join her and Cassandra going rowing. Sam says she’d love to, and leaves the office, singing “Row, row, row your boat.” On the security camera monitors, Janet sees Jack, Daniel and Teal’c start singing, and turns up the volume to make sure she’s not imagining it.

******

They are all in the Briefing room, and Jack is protesting that he did not sing, claiming he doesn’t even know the words to the song. Janet switches on the computer monitor, which then shows the security footage of him singing. Then he realizes what it was: Urgo. And Urgo pops up in a seat next to Janet. Once again, they ask Urgo how to get rid of him, and he still claims he doesn’t know. Sam now starts to think that he may be telling the truth. Urgo then tries to get them to play a game using a dictionary to look up words.

******

In the control room we see the Stargate being dialed. Urgo looks at the MALP being sent through the Stargate and asks what it is. Sam tells him it’s their version of him. Urgo says, “But not a suave and sophisticated, n’est-ce pas?” She continues to explain to Urgo what the MALP does, until Jack says, “Carter.” She stops, realizing that she’s giving in to Urgo by telling him what he wants to know. Urgo sees the picture of the beach paradise and asks if they can go there. Sam tells him it’s an illusion. While Hammond is requesting to talk to someone from the planet, Urgo is looking thoughtfully at Jack. He then says, “...you were just thinking about that island Maui, with the big beaches and the little bikinis...” Sam turns around and looks at Jack, smirking. A voice is then heard over the speakers, “Who dares challenge Togar?”

Daniel explains that they didn’t mean to challenge him, and tells Togar that they can see and hear Urgo. Togar tells him that is an “error,” and that they should return the subjects so that Urgo can be removed.

This pleases Jack, but Sam reminds him that they could be risking their lives. Jack asks if they all want to give up SG-1 and wander around with Urgo for the rest of their lives, or if they want to take the risk so they can get on with their lives. They all vote to take the chance.

******

We see SG-1 in their locker room, getting ready to go to the planet. Daniel wonders what Togar meant by Urgo being an error. When Urgo starts whining about not wanting to be killed, this strikes a reaction in both Daniel and Sam, who are now beginning to realize that Urgo is a sentient being. Jack doesn’t want to hear this, so he gets up and waves his arms through Urgo, saying “You’re not going to convince me it’s alive!” Sam and Daniel try to change Jack’s mind, but it doesn’t work.

******

On the planet, SG-1 are ‘beamed’ into the underground lab, and their weapons are gone. Jack says, “I hate it when that happens.” A door opens and Togar walks in, telling them not to move. He then demonstrates the removal of ‘Urgo’ on a creature that is in a small glass dome. Carter and Daniel tell Togar that Urgo is alive, and Jack asks if there is a way of removing Urgo without killing him. When Togar declares “There is not!” Jack is quick to accept this, “Okay, had to ask.” Daniel comes up with the idea that Togar puts Urgo in him, so that he doesn’t die.

We then cut to seeing Urgo being removed from SG-1’s brains and put into Togar’s. SG-1 come out from under the lasers and look around; Daniel asks how they know Urgo is alive, and Urgo annoys Togar by saying, “I’m here! I’m here! Tell ‘em, tell ‘em.” Togar turns to Urgo and says, “I will, as soon as you are quiet.” This is enough evidence for SG-1 to confirm Urgo is still alive.

******

SG-1 walk back through the Stargate to see Hammond and a technician looking at the MALP. Sam asks, “General, didn’t we just...?” Hammond replies, “You’ve been gone over ten hours, Major.”

Hammond then orders them to report to the infirmary.

End credits.
