1. Is StargateFan.com an official site? 2. Can I get autographs from the actors? 3. Where did you get all the pictures for the site? 4. There are many sites using fancy Java and Flash, will you be considering using them for your site soon? 5. How did you make the graphics for the front page and the titles? 6. What's with the funny captions on many of the graphics? 7. Are you going to install a search engine for the Fiction Archives someday? 8. How come you don't have all the episode summaries up yet?
9. How come you don't have all the episode image captures up yet? 10. I have fan art I drew//created based on the show. Can I submit them to your site? 11. I'm writing a fan fic right now and wanted to know something about the military/Egypt/science/medicine. Can you help me? 12. I have a story already up at Heliopolis, but want to link to your site. Can I send you Helio's link for your archives? 13. How come you don't take slash or ship fics on your site? 14. Why does it take so long for my fic to be posted on your site?
Actually, no. We are a fan-run operation, non-profit, all done in our spare time. If there's such thing as spare time. Lol. We aren't affliated in any way with MGM, Gekko, Showtime, or Sci Fi Channel. This site is merely our show of how much we love the series Stargate SG-1 and our way of giving support to the show and its growing multitude of fans.
Sorry, but since we are an unofficial site, we have no connections what so ever to obtaining autographs and so forth. If you wish to try, you may write to the related studios and request pictures and autographs. Be warned, this may take a while or they may not be able to due to high volume. Another possibility is the conventions the actors do attend such as WOLF, Gatecon, and Best of Both Worlds.
All pictures were obtained through screen capturing, whether via Katya (our multimedia gal), Philip's Screen Captures Library which he donated to us, or through other generous fans taking time to capture and send them. Some photos were scanned from press kit photos and slides, but most of them were obtained through the above three means.
Absolutely not. I love the fancy features Javascript and Flash can provide, but to be honestly, there really is no need for this site to utilize such enhancements. Javascript can contain many errors and some browsers still do not accept them. And with so many various types of browsers out there with different options, there is always the chance someone can't use Javascript or Flash, meaning it bars them from Stargate sites. To me, IMHO, that is unacceptable. Our goal here to is give the fans the best access possible to our site wth simplified navigation (no frames) and easy to read layout. While we're not perfect, the staff is pretty comfortable with the way the layout is right now and really sees no need for fancier methods. Nice and simple.
In the past, I had relied on Paint Shop Pro but lately, most of the newer computer graphics such as the front image, was done on Adobe Photoshop 5.5, sliced down with Adobe ReadyImage 2.0 Both softwares are great to work with, but I still highly recommend Paint Shop Pro 5.0 or higher for those who are just starting out in fiddling with computer graphics. Their controls are easy to decipher and have many shortcuts in creating web graphics. Great way to ease into the much more complicated, yet very versatile Photoshop.
I love graphics for the site, but felt they were rather boring to just look at. Got the idea from another Stargate site (Steph's which was great), but rather than stick text underneath each pic and take up space, I've included it into the HTML codes, so even if you turn off the graphics to load the pages faster, you'll still have a wee laugh coming for you. Or at least...I *hope* they're funny! *g*
Currently, our archive has a searchable author index, but I am exploring several options for upgrading to an actual search engine. At present nothing will be available for trial for a while yet. Even if I implement a search engine or an auto-loading archive for the site, it will be a lengthy process.
Most of the synopsis we had in the beginning were from season 1 and 2 when we were still on Geocities before we brought this domain name and moved. Thanks to Dee Tervo, formerly of SG-1.Net when it was run by Sean F., we had most of season 3 up. She had graciously given us her old synopsis. We are currently looking for more contributions from her, but RL has to take priority I believe so as of now, she isn't submitting anything yet, but we look forward to her return to this section soon. In the meantime, I am looking for synopsis submissions. I do ask that they be detailed and neutral sounding. Meaning - whether you're a ship fan, a slash fan, a gen fan, a Daniel fan, a Jack fan, a Teal'c fan, whatever your preferences, it can not reflect on the synopsis. Because those reading it may not necessarily share the same preferences.
We actually do have a huge archive of images from most episodes that we're slowly putting up. But unfortunately each and every image has to be hand renamed and coded so it's a very slow process.
Oh definitely! I would love to have them and give them a home. A little patience though since I am very slow and currently always behind for one reason or another. But yes, I would love to put up a gallery for you. Or better yet, if it's up somewhere on your own website, let me know and I'll list it in our Fan Art section for everyone to check out!
We can try. *g* We have a research staff who occasionally contributes articles and links to our site. The message boards are available through the Fun Stuff section. You can post a question up there.
Sorry, but we can't accept Heliopolis' links. The stories coded and loaded on their servers are theirs only. We can, however, accept your links on any other websites OR your story in text, Word, Rich Text Format and layout it out for you. We can not infringe on Heliopolis' rights by linking stories out of their servers. Sorry.
Hm. This is a very touchy situation. After discussing it with the senior staff, I decided to take gen fics only. I'm not trying to segregate fics from one preference or another. I myself have nothing against those who read ship or slash fics. However, StargateFan.com is a gen rated family site, meaning people of all ages may access this site.I do believe in responsible web content and the appropiate warning labels on fics and everything we have on the site. I can't put ship or slash because of the adult content and/or innuendos in the stories. I wouldn't feel comfortable finding out that little kids who shouldn't be reading this stuff did so through our site. Therefore, we've geared our fic guidelines to help keep things in the gen ball park.
Also, there are a number of already special sites for specific genres such as ship and slash who deserve the attention for all the hard work they put in to accommodate fans who prefer these fics. I do highly recommend checking those sites out if this is your fancy and you're an adult. A lot of hard work and dedication went into those sites.
All the fics we received are individually looked over and then coded to fit the layout of our web format. It's for design purposes, plus allows the readers to use their browser options to enlarge fics which you can't do with a text file based page only. It takes a while because it's only three of us so on fic reading staff so far, but hopefully, that will change soon when I get more help.
